국문 초록

이 글은 해방 후 지난 70년간 이루어진 제주도 무가·무속 연구의 성과와 과제를 다루었다. 무가를 먼저 다룬 뒤 무속을 검토하였다. 각각 분야에서 시간적 흐름에 따라 지속적으로 학문적 관심을 보여준 연구자들의 성과를 중심으로 정리하였다. 제주도 무가와 무속은 밀접한 관련이 있다. 무가는 무속의례에서 구송되는 것이니 넓게 보자면 무속의 여러 요소 가운데 하나이다. 무속은 다양한 무가의 존재로 인하여 그 양상과 의미가 더욱 풍부해졌다. 제주도 무가와 무속 연구의 성과는 1960년대부터 본격적으로 시작되었다. 진성기, 장주근, 현용준 등의 선구자들이 연구의 토대를 놓았다. 특히 현용준은 무가와 무속 분야를 모두 아우르는 큰 업적을 이루었다. 후속세대 가운데는 문무병, 김헌선, 강정식의 성과를 주목할 만하다. 제주도 무가와 무속 연구는 이른 시기부터 제주학을 이끌었다. 무가와 무속 연구의 과제도 당연히 있다. 무가에서는 갈래별, 유형별 연구를 다양하게 진행하는 것이 필요하다. 무속에서는 다양한 의례양상, 심방, 신앙민, 무악, 무구 등에 대한 관심이 요구된다. 종합적으로 다루어야 진면목을 드러낼 수 있다. 무가와 무속 분야에 공통되는 과제도 있다. 무가와 무속의 상호관계성 확인이 필요하다. 비교연구를 통하여 보편성과 특수성을 객관적으로 확인하고, 일반적인 원리와 이론을 수립할 수 있는 큰 연구로 나아가야 한다. 학술적으로 의미 있고 완성도 높은 자료집이 꾸준히 발간되어야 한다. 후속세대의 양성 역시 큰 과제이다.

영문 초록

This paper summarizes the accomplishments and challenges of 60 years of studies since the liberation of Korea from Japan, on shamanic songs and shamanism in Jeju. It first analyzes research on shamanic songs, then on shamanism. In each field, the results of the scholars who have shown continued academic interest are diachronically summarized. The research results on shamanic songs and shamanism in Jeju began to appear in earnest from the 1960s. Such pioneers as Jin Seonggi, Jang Joogeun, and Hyun Yongjoon have taken the lead. In particular, Hyun Yongjoon has accomplished a great deal in terms of the scope of his study, encompassing both shamanic songs and shamanism itself. The academic findings of his successive scholars including Moon Moobyung, Kim Heonseon and Kang Jeongsik are also noteworthy. Research on shamanic songs and shamanism in Jeju has led the Jejuhak, or academic studies on Jeju. There still remain challenges for studies on shamanic songs and shamanism. It is necessary to apply research by genres and types to shamanic songs. In the case of shamanism, an interest is required in various forms of ritual, shamans, believers in shamanism, shamanic music, and shamanic tools. A comprehensive approach is needed to see the true nature of shamanic songs and shamanism. Since shamanic songs and shamanism are closely related, certain procedures to confirm their relationship are to be taken. Through comparative studies, we need to identify their universality and specificity, and move on to the next step to establish general principles and theories. Publication is imperative for research materials that are highly recognized for their outstanding academic value. Training the next generation of researchers is also a big challenge to remain.
