조선시대 유학자들이 본 제주의 유목문화

국문 초록

탐라는 역사적으로 탐라의 고유문화 위에 대몽골(원)제국의 유목문화, 그리고 조선의 주자학적 문화가 덧씌워진 곳이다. 탐라교유의 문화나 몽골문화는 기본적으로 중상주의적 성격을 지닌 교류의 문화이며 문화의 성격도 바다와 육지를 잇는 길 즉 통상에서 가치를 추구하는 면이 강하다. 그러나 해금(海禁)을 통한 고립을 고수하는 조선시대의 탐라문화는 이전에 존재했던 탐라의 문화와는 근본적으로 성격이 다르다. 조선의 시대이념은 신분차별에 바탕을 둔 주자학이다. 조선시대 관리나 죄인의 신분으로 탐라(제주)에 왔던 성리학자들이 남긴 보고나 문집 속에는 탐라의 독특한 문화가 소개되어 있다. 그 중 몽골의 유목문화와 관계되는 대표적인 사례는 코빌라이카간과 말[馬], 다리, 갓 등이다.

영문 초록

Historically, Tamra (Jeju island) is the place overlaid with original culture of the island, nomad culture of the Great Mongol empire (Yeke Monggol Ulus), and Neo―Confucianism of Chosen dynasty. Original culture of the Tamra island and nomad culture of the Great Mongol empire (Yeke Monggol Ulus) were fundamentally devoted to the cultural exchanges through sea routes in a mercantilist manner. Thus two culture`s characteristics have strong tendency to the pursuit of value for commercial trade between the continent and the sea. In Chosen dynasty, however, which clarified adherence to the isolation from foreign powers through prohibiting voyage by national law, culture of the Tamra island showed quite different characteristics from that in previous era. During Chosen Dynasty, Neo-Confucianism was regarded as a political ideology based on rigid social discrimination of classes. The official reports written by government officials and collection of literary works of penal offenders who lived in Tamra introduced a unique culture of Tamra island for the period of Chosen dynasty. Among many cases showing Tamra`s cultural connections with Mongolian` nomad culture, classic examples are remains related to Khubilai Khagan, Mongol horses, Dari (traditional women`s underwear in Jeju), and Gat (traditional headgear in Jeju), etc.
