문화주권의 ‘제주해녀(濟州海女)’와 해군기지

국문 초록

나는 사상적 자유가 전제된 실증주의적 경험과학이 우리 세대가 천착해야할 과제라는 생각을 한다. 관찰과 예측의 대상이 된 사회 가 표현하고자 하는 것을 제대로 표현하지 못한 것이 19세기 이래 근대화 과정 속에서 지배되고 속박되었던 상황이다. 학문이라는 이름하에 끊임없이 수입된 것들 □라□대 (카더라)의 수준으로 이식해온 점에 대해서 심각한 반성이 없으면, 이 땅에서 학문이 존재할 공간은 어디에서도 찾아볼 수 없게 된다. 비판을 목적으로 설정한 관찰과 예측이 준동하고, 그러한 과정을 사회운동 이라는 이름으로 정당화하려는 시도들이 횡행하는 것은 학문도 삶도 모두 어지럽게 만들 수 있다. 地名과 고유명사의 헤게모니라는 문제를 제기함으로서 나는 제주 하는 단어의 포기를 주장하고, 그 대신에 문화주권과 정체성 복권에 관련된 용어로서의 耽羅 를 제안하였다. 동시에 물질에 관련된 키워드인 海女 가 내포하고 있는 植民知의 문제를 제기하여, 토속명에 바탕을 둔 □수 로 대체할 것도 제안하였다. 植民知의 정체성으로 똘똘 뭉쳐진 두 가지 단어들, 즉 濟州 와 海女 가 결합된 濟州海女 는 중층적 식민지의 극단적인 표현이라고 지적하지 않을 수 없다. 그래서 그 현상에 대해서는 탐라□수 하고 적어야 한다고 생각한다. 해군기지가 들어설 수밖에 없는 상황의 이 섬이 위기의 상황을 맞을 것인가, 아니면 기회의 상황을 맞을 것인가? 우리는 여러 가지의 관찰 과정과 사실인식을 통해서 위기인가 아니면 기회인가의 예측을 해야 하는 단계에 왔다. 인간사회의 문제는 궁극적으로 비가역적이다. 내가 여기서 위기의 상황을 거론하는 것은 오키나와의 선행경험에 대한 사실인식을 기초로 하기 때문이다. 오키나와의 상황 즉 양속지배의 오키나와 상황과 같은 위기의 현상이 이 섬에 엄습하게 될 것인가. 아니면, 군사기지의 상륙을 기회의 현상으로 만들어낼 수 있을 것인가의 기로에 선 이 섬의 운명에 대해서 어느 누구도 장담할 수는 없다. 그러나 예측은 가능하다.

영문 초록

I like to believe that positivistic experimental science should be our target based on the freedom of thought in terms of doing social science. During the modernization process in its relatively long history under the endless domination and exploitation, the word society seemed not to be able to express its own reality through the necessary keen observation and careful our voice if we would not have a chance of the concerned reflexivity to review the phenomena of the perennially imported science in the name of academism. Doing social science seems not to be focusing on critics at its final purpose. If anyone tries to do that, it jeopardizes everything related with life including science because of the supposedly weak position of observation and expectation for the science as the first-hand step. I suggest that the word of Jeju in terms of the language hegemony to search for toponymy should be deleted and, instead, like to revive the word of Tamna by means of cultural sovereignty and identity of this island. I like also to ask for dropping the word of Haenyo (sea-divers) and revitalize the word of Jamsoo instead. The reason why I raise this issue is based on the colonial knowledge long and deeply rooted in the history of domination and hegemony around this island. I do especially point at the expression of JejuHaenyo as a sort of the nested colonialism. Tamna Jamsoo should be replaced for it for the shake of the islanders` cultural sovereignty and identity. There seems to be a mind-boggling and explosive feeling of unsafety and uncertainty based on ongoing debates of the construction of the naval base in this island. This situation could be either crisis or opportunity for the fate of this island. It is the time to use the keen observation and furthermore the careful expectation in terms of dong social science. Human issue seems to be naturally negentropic. The previous Okinawan case in the context of history can be employed for our lessons for examining the whole process of the crisis and opportunity for the future of this island. Is provides us for a role the mirror for experimentation for the necessary expectation.
