제주신화를 활용한 향토사 학습 방안

국문 초록

향토사 학습은 지역 사람들의 유·무형의 역사적 산물을 통해 역사를 학습함으로써 아동들에게 역사에 대한 호기심을 느끼게 해주는 장점을 지니지만 현행 사회 교과서와 지역화 교과서는 내용 및 서술방식에 있어 아동들의 흥미 및 역사적 상상력을 자극하지 못하는 단점을 지니고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 향토사 학습의 개념 및 필요성을 선행연구를 통해 분석하였고, 향토사 학습 자료로서 제주신화가 어떤 의의를 지니고 있는지 살펴보았다. 또한 제주신화를 활용한 세 가지 학습 유형을 제시하고 실제 수업을 실시하였다. 더불어 실행한 수업을 바탕으로 향토사 학습 방향을 제시하였다. 제주신화의 향토사 학습 자료로서의 가치는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 제주신화에는 시대를 살았던 사람들의 역사의식이 반영되어 있으며 공식적인 역사기록으로 남지 않은 일반 민중들의 이야기가 담겨있다. 둘째, 제주신화는 향토의 풍습, 자연환경, 가치관 등을 찾아볼 수 있는 흥미로운 학습 자료이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 제주신화를 활용한 향토사 학습 방안을 다르게 읽기 , 두껍게 읽기 , 작은 것을 통해 읽기 로 제시하여 수업을 실행하였다. 향토사 학습 실행 후 얻은 제주신화를 활용한 향토사 학습의 의의를 정리하자면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 제주신화를 활용한 향토사 학습은 지루하지 않고 즐거운 것이라는 인식이 생겼다. 둘째, 제주신화는 현존하는 지역의 당과 관련되며 심방에 의해 구전되는 내용이므로 아동들에게 살아있는 역사, 변화하는 역사, 생동감 있는 역사를 느끼게 해주는 좋은 소개였다. 셋째, 제주신화에는 중앙집권적인 교과서에서는 다루어지지 않는 제주 민중의 이야기, 교과서의 서술을 부정하는 이야기 등이 담겨있어서 비판적인 역사의식을 심어줄 수 있는 기회를 제공해 주었다. 그러나 신화를 활용한 향토사 학습을 실행할 경우 다음의 세 가지 점을 고려해야 한다. 첫째, 신화 선정 및 제시 방식이다. 제주신화를 향토사 학습의 소재로 선정할 경우 학습목표 및 이에 적합한 신화를 골라야한다. 또한 신화를 제시할 때에도 연극 대본 형식, 구연동화, 플래시동화, 사료형태 등의 방법을 고려해야 한다. 둘째, 신화 번역 및 사료화과정을 고려해야 한다. 신화는 심방의 구연내용을 여과 없이 담고 있기 때문에 아동들이 접하기에는 부적절한 지역 방언, 비속어, 잔인한 표현들이 삽입되어 있다. 따라서 분량 및 내용을 재구성하는 작업을 반드시 거쳐야 한다. 셋째, 신화의 사료적 가치와 종교 문제를 고려해야 한다. 신화는 민간신앙이 반영된 문화적 산물이기 때문에 교사는 이러한 점을 충분히 숙지하고 신화의 이야기적 요소에 한정짓고 향토사 학습에 활용해야 한다. 초등학교 학생들에게 제주신화는 다루기에 따라 재미있는 향토사 자료가 될 수도 있고 난해하고 심오한 자료가 될 수도 있다. 이는 단점도 될 수 있겠지만 중학교, 고등학교로 이어지는 연속성에서 볼 때 향토사 학습 자료로서 무궁무진한 가능성을 드러낸 것이라 여겨진다. 이처럼 제주신화를 활용한 향토사 교재의 단계형 자료 개발은 추후 지속적으로 연구되어야 할 과제이다.

영문 초록

Learning of local history has advantages to help children have senses of closeness and liveliness by learning history through the local people`s tangible·intangible historic products and make them feel a curiosity about history. However, examining the current social studies textbooks·localized textbooks weaknesses are found out that they don`t contain contents of local history as its learning materials, and that in narrative styles and methods they don`t stir up children`s interest and historic imagination. Accordingly, the present study aimed to pay attention to the values of the Jeju myth as a material of learning local history and propose a direction of teaching local history for the current elementary school teachers through planning and applying methods of learning local history using the Jeju myth. According to the purposes of this research we analyzed the concept and need of learning local history through precedent studies, and examined what meanings the Jeju myth had as a material of learning local history. In addition, in applying the Jeju myth to learning local history teaching methods were provided being divided into three types and workbooks were made by each type to apply them to practical classes. Based on the class conducted, we proposed the direction of learning local history. The values as a material of learning local history of the Jeju myth are as follows. First, the Jeju myth reflects historical consciousness of the people who lives in the times and contains the general public`s stories which are not left in official historical records. Second, the Jeju myth is an interesting learning material to find local customs and manners, natural environments and values etc. Accordingly, in the current study classes were conducted providing the method of learning local history using the Jeju myth in three ways including reading differently , reading thickly and reading through little things . As a result of an analysis of the survey obtained after conduction local history learning and class responses, the summary of the meanings of learning local history using the Jeju myth is as follows. First, awareness was generated that learning local history using the Jeju myth is not boring but interesting and amusing. Second, as the Jeju myth is concerned with the existing shrine of the region and has contents handed down orally by shamans, it was a good material to make children feel living, changing and vivid history. Third, the Jeju myth contained stories of Jeju`s common people and stories to deny the narration of textbooks etc which are not addressed in centralized textbooks, a opportunity was given to inculcate critical consciousness of history. However, if you conduct teaching local history using myths, you should consider the following three aspects. First, it involves how to select and present the myth. If you select the Jeju myth as a material of local history learning, you should select appropriate learning objectives and myth. In addition, when you present the myth, you should various methods such as a form of the play script, orally narrated children`s story, flash fairy tales, a form of historical data should be considered. As the myth contains what was orally narrated by a shaman without any correction, improper local dialects, slangs and cruel expressions may be inserted. Thus, the work to reorganize the volume and contents must be followed. Third, the historical values of myths and religious issues should be considered. Since myths are cultural products to reflect popular beliefs, they may cause misunderstanding inevitably. Teachers should be fully aware of there aspects and apply them to local history learning limiting them to their elements of the story.
