제주 근,현대사에 대한 성찰적 인식

국문 초록

제주의 근·현대사에서 이재수난과 제주4·3사건은 제주민중의 저항운동으로 인식하고 있다. 이재수난은 19세기 말에 전국에서 일어난 민중봉기처럼 외세와 부당한 반 민중 세력에 저항하여 일어났으나. 그 과정에서 제주사람들끼리 싸움으로 확대되면서 도민 모두가 엄청난 피해를 당한 불행한 사건으로 변질되었다. 제주4·3사건도 명분상으로는 남한 단독 정부 수립과 미군정의 실정에 대한 반발로 공산주의 세력이 주도하여 일어난 저항사건이었다. 그런데 그 진압 과정에서 반 인권적 사태가 벌어짐으로써 도민의 희생이 컸다. 이 사건도 발발 동기는 저항이었지만 그 과정에서 도민간의 갈등이 증폭되면서 서로가 큰 고통을 당했고 피해도 컸다. 이 두 사건은 제주의 역사와 문화의 특성인 주변성과 깊은 관련을 갖고 있다. 발발 동기는 명분을 가진 저항적 성격이 강하지만, 그 사태의 진전과정에서 야기된 문제를 볼 때에 수난사적 입장에서 인식할 필요가 있다. 그렇다고 사건의 역사적 의미가 축소되지 않고, 오히려 인간과 동시대를 보다 정직하게 이해할 수 있다. 이러한 입장은 역사를 이념적으로 인식하지 않기 때문에 인간의 삶의 진실을 밝혀낼 수 있다. 또한 제주역사와 섬이라는 변방지역의 주변적 문화 특성과 긴밀한 관계를 갖는다. 또한 수난사적 입장에서 제주 역사를 인식할 때에 소통의 통로가 될 수 있다. 저항사적 입장은 역사적 가치를 강화할 수는 있어도 이념을 달리하는 자들끼리의 소통을 방해한다. 이념은 상대적이지만 소통은 평화로 이르는 통로가 된다. 제주의 근·현대사에 나타난 이러한 문제는 제주문화를 주변성이라는 틀로 인식할 수 있는 한 단서를 제공한다.

영문 초록

Lee Jae-Soo`s Rebellion and Jeju 4·3 Incident are recognized as resistance movement of Jeju people in the modern history of Jeju. Lee Jae-Soo`s Rebellion broke out resisting against the foreign power and unfair anti-people power like popular uprisings which occurred over the nation in the end of the 19th century. But in the process of the rebellion, it was lead to the battle among people of Jeju. Finally it ended up the unfortunate incident which was damaged to people of Jeju. Jeju 4·3 Incident is justified as the rebellion that communists leaded against the military regime of the United States and the separate establishment of government of South Korea. But the sacrifice of people of Jeju was great because the situation of anti-human rights happened in the process of suppression. The motives of outbreak was resistance. But the result of that was pain and damage from the increase of conflict among people of Jeju. Both of them, Lee Jae Soo`s Rebellion and Jeju 4·3 Incident, are closely related with the periphery which is one of the historical and cultural traits of Jeju. The motives of outbreak is justified because they have strong characteristic of resistance. But these two rebellions need to be considered as the history of suffering when we analyze the problems caused in the process of situations. However, that does not mean that the historical significance of them should be reduced. The viewpoint of history of suffering means that history should not be considered ideologically and the truth of human life can be revealed from the historical event. This kind of viewpoint has close relationship with the cultural traits of peripheral region, island, and history of Jeju. Additionally, considering the history of Jeju in the viewpoint of history of suffering, we will find the pathway of communication. While the viewpoint of history of resistance strengthens the historical value, it prevents people who have different ideologies from communicating. Ideology is relative, on the other hand, communication is the path to peace.
