조선후기 유배인의 서간(書簡) 토론

국문 초록

1800년 정조의 죽음으로 정약용과 정약전 형제 모두 유배에 처해졌다. 유배 중인 두 형제가 서로에게 보낸 서간은 일찍이 ≪유배지에서 온 편지≫로정리되어 세간에 잘 알려져 있다. 본고에서 필자는 다산 정약용 손암 정약전의 편지 글을 따라 두 형제의 유배 생활을 복원하고자 했다. 근래 정약전의시문집이 발견되었고 아울러 서간문 몇 편이 더 알려졌다. 또한 정약용의 아들 정학유가 흑산도의 큰아버지를 찾아갔던 기록도 공개되었다. 이상의 새로운 자료들을 포함하여 필자가 발굴한 문헌들을 추가하여 정약용과 정약전의유배 생활과 학문적 교류의 내용을 재구성해 보았다. 이를 통해 그간 알려지지 않았던 두 형제의 대화 내용과 학문적 교류의 실상이 밝혀졌다. 가령 정약용이 강진으로의 이주 계획을 밝히자 정약전은 오행의 원리를 들어 이를 만류했으며, 두 형제 모두 유배지 주민이나 지방관을 위해 공문서를 대작(代作) 한 사실을 새롭게 밝혔다. 나아가 정약용이 형님 정약전의 행장을 작성하면서 고백한바 대로 유배 동안 다산의 저술 작업이 형님과의 토론 과정에서 완성되었음을 알 수 있었다.

영문 초록

After the death of King Jeongjo in 180, both Jeong brothers(Jeong Yak-yong and Jeong Yak-jeon) were exiled. Those leters they wrote to each other in exile period were put together in Leters in Exile and are widely known. This article aims to restore their life of exile by their leters. Recently, a garland writen by Jeong Yak-jeon is newly found, in adition to some more leters. Also a record was discovered that shows Jeong Hak-yu, who is Jeong Yak-yong’s son, visited his uncle Jeong Yak-jeon in Heuksan-do. Including new materials shown above and those literatures found by the writer, this article reconstructed the contents of Jeong brother s exile life and their academic exchanges. This reveals the conversations and academic exchanges betwen the two brothers, which had not ben known before. For example, when Jeong Yak-yong revealed his plan to move to Gangjin, his older brother Jeong Yak-jeon disuaded him, on the grounds of principles of the Five Elements(五行). Also, I newly revealed that both brothers had ghostwriten oficial documents for exiles or local government oficials. Furthermore, we can find out that Jeong Yak-yong’s academic maturity has depened thanks to the discusion with his brother, which Dasan himself defined in his brother’s record of conduct after his death.
