세노 우마쿠마(瀨野馬熊)의 編史활동과 한국사 인식

국문 초록

본 논문은 1917년부터 1935년까지 한국의 역사 왜곡에 중요한 역할을 수행하였던 세노 우마쿠마(瀨野馬熊, 1874~1935)의 한국사 연구와 인식을 검토하였다. 일제는 한국 침략과 식민지 지배를 정당화하고 식민 지배의 당위성을 마련하기 위해 이데올로기의 정립에 주력하였다. 이 작업은 강점과 더불어 본격적으로 진행되었고 수많은 식민사학자들이 투입되었다. 세노도 여기에 참여해 당파성론을 주창한 것으로 많이 알려져 있다. 세노는 타이완 총독부와 만선역사지리조사부, 조선총독부에서 근무한 특이한 경력의 소유자이다. 그는 타이완 총독부에서 문서 편찬 및 土匪討伐史 편찬 사업에 참여하였다. 그리고 시라토리 구라키치(白鳥庫吉)가 주도하는 만선역사지리조사부에 들어가 일제의 침략 행위를 돕는 조사 사업에 참여하였다. 내한한 후에는 중추원, 조선사편수회에서 근무하였고, 다양한 관찬사서의 집필을 담당하며 한국사 왜곡 작업의 실무진으로 활동하였다. 그는 한국사 중에서도 고려와 조선시대를 주로 다루었다. 그의 주요 관심사는 조선사편수회 참여를 기준으로 연구 주제가 대외관계사에서 정치사로 확대된다. 그는 특히 한국의 정치를 당쟁사로 서술하고 당파성론을 주장하였다. 그는 당쟁의 기원을 사화로 확립시켰고 고려시대까지 당파성론의 적용 범위를 확대시켰다. 이러한 그의 한국사 인식은 조선 멸망의 원인을 조선 내부에서 찾아 식민통치에 정당성을 부여하였다. 이것은 그가 참여한 각종 저술과 관찬사서에 반영되어 확산되었고 한국사 왜곡의 지침이 되었다.

영문 초록

The present study was aimed to examine the Korean history study and awareness of Seno Umakuma (1874~1935), which had played a critical role in distorting Korean history for 19 years (1917~1935). In addition, it attempted to identify his influence over the historiography of Japanese colonialism in Korea after analyzing his study and perspective of Korean history. To justify the invasion and colonial rule, Japan paid a keen attention to establishing ideology. This attempt began with the occupation by force and a number of colonial historians were involved in this work. Seno Umakuma was one of them and known to have advocated factionalism. Seno had particular career background: he had worked in the Japanese Government-General of Taiwan, the Inquiry Section of Mansun’s History and Geography, and the Japanese Government-General of Korea. After he came to Korea, he worked in Jungchuwon and the Compilation Association of Chosun History. Seno had published a number of books and most of them are about Korean history, mainly focusing on Goryeo(Korean dynasty, 918-1392) and Chosun, of which the latter take the majority of his publications. He often described Korea(Chosun) as a nation of non-independence and often suffering from external invasions and pervasive with toadyism. He unjustly ignored the independence of Korean history, emphasizing only heteronomy. And he described that Korean politics is the history of party strife and asserted factionalism. He extended the historical scope of Korean factionalism, applying it back to Goryeo Dynasty. The way he understood Korean history falsely found the cause of the fall of Chosun inside and tried to justify Japanese colonial rule.
