국문 초록

한국전쟁은 한국 근현대사에 지울 수 없는 상처를 남겼고 그 상처는 지금도 완전히 봉합되지 못했다. 그렇게 끝날 수밖에 없었던 주요인으로 대부분 휴전협정을 꼽는다. 휴전협정에 대한 연구는 주로 휴전회담의 결과물로 많이 논의되어 왔지만, 정작 협정에 이르기까지 전 과정을 보여주는 휴전회담 회의록에 대한 연구는 상대적으로 부족한 편이다. 특히 휴전회담 회의록에 기록된 유엔군과 공산군 대표들의 대화는 통역사의 언어적 중재를 통해 이뤄졌음에도 휴전회담장에서 통역사의 역할은 별다른 관심을 받지 못했다. 이에 휴전회담장에서 통역사의 역할을 조명해봄으로써 이제껏 휴전회담장 ‘바깥’을 향해있던 시선을 회담장 ‘안’으로 돌려보고자 한다. 휴전회담장 ‘안’에서 소통을 담당했던 통역사의 역할에 대한 분석은 휴전회담장내의 실제 모습을 그려보는 데 도움이 될 것이다. 또한 통역사의 역할 분석을 통해 미시적 차원에서 휴전회담의 또 다른 측면을 살펴보고, 기존 휴전회담 관련 연구에서 보지 못했던 휴전회담의 막후 전개과정의 일부를 재구성해 보았다.

영문 초록

The aim of this study is to identify the role of interpreters at the Korean Armistice Negotiations. The Korean war is a traumatic experience for Koreans. As the United Nations Command(UNC) and the Communists fail to reach a peace agreement, the two Koreas are technically still at war. Many studies point out the problem of the cease fire talks. However, there is little attention to the interpreters at the Korean Armistice Negotiation. This paper examines the record of cease fire talks to find out the role of interpreters in the political or military settings. We need to consider the work done by interpreters in conflicts and under the conditions of verbal aggression in the cease fire talks. The study on the interpreters at the Korean Armistice Negotiations helps to find out the inner scene of the meetings. Interpreters played three roles; the role of cultural mediator, the role of watcher and the role of editor. With the study of the roles, we can understand interpreter’s activities at the process of the negotiations. If we put more importance on the role of interpreters, it could provide a new perspective of the Korean Armistice.
