망명 작가 엘제 라스커-쉴러와 자가 출판

국문 초록

독일에서는 18세기에 경제적 이유 때문에 그리고 19세기에는 정치적 이유 때문에 작가들이 자가 출판을 했고 20세기에는 나치의 등장과 독일 지식인의 망명 때문에 수많은 자가 출판이 이루어졌다. 1939년에 팔레스타인으로 망명한 여류 작가, 엘제 라스커-쉴러는 이미 망명 이전에도 자가 출판을 한 경험이 있었다. 그녀는 자신의 책을 출간했던 출판인과 인세 문제 때문에 갈등을 빚은 후 정상적인 출판을 할 수 없었다. 결국 그녀는 출판사를 찾지 못하고 드라마를 자가 출판했다. 또 망명 후에도 그녀는 자가 출판을 할 수밖에 없었는데 그 이유는 팔레스타인에서 시온주의자들이 독일어를 사용하는데 불만을 품고 독일어 책 출간을 방해했기 때문이다. 이와 같이 자가 출판은 정상적인 출판이 불가능한 상황에서 이루어진다. 그녀는 비록 작가이지만 출판인 역할을 했고 심지어 서점인 역할까지도 했다. 이것은 창작, 출판, 유통의 각 개별 주체가 담당했던 일을 한 사람이 담당함으로써 기존 문학 패러다임과는 다른 양상을 보여주고 있다. 문학과 출판 역사에서 사라질 뻔한 자가 출판물을 연구하는 것은 특별한 의미가 있다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

In the 18th century, self-publishing began for economic reasons in Germany. In the 19th century, several authors self-published for political reasons, and in the 20th century, numerous self-publishing was made due to the entrance of the Nazis and the exile of German intellectuals. Exile intellectuals, who did not have the opportunity to publish their books in exile, self-published 105 books in 40 countries of exile. A female writer who exiled to Palestine in 1939, Else Lasker-Schüler, had already the experience of self-publishing before exile. She couldn t to publish her book normally after a conflict with the publisher who published her book due to royalties issues. Eventually, she was unable to find a publisher and self-published the drama Die Wupper. In addition, after her exile, she had to self-publish because in Palestine the Zionists were dissatisfied with the use of German and prevented the publication of German books. She introduced self-published books at reading groups and sold them directly there. Although she was a writer, at the same time she served as a publisher and even a bookstore. This shows a different aspect from the existing literary paradigm in which one person is in charge of production, publication, and distribution. I would like to investigate the specific reasons why Else Lasker-Schüler made self-publishing, and how it is accepted by which readers.
