A Methodology of the Cognitive Research and the Education of the College Writing

국문 초록

작문 연구에서 인지적 연구는 교실 현장에서 학생을 변화시키고자 하는 교육적 요구와 연관되어 있다. 인지적 연구를 하는 것은 수사적 상황에서 학생들을 변화시키고 작문 능력을 향상시키고자 하는 목적 때문이다. 그렇지만 지난 30여 년간을 돌이켜 볼 때 인지적 연구를 통해 작문 교실이 개선되고 학생들의 쓰기 능력이 향상된 것 같지는 않다. 오히려 좋은 글에 대한 기준은 더 모호해졌고, 작문 학습 방법은 더 복잡해 졌다. 인지적 연구가 작문교육을 변화시키는 데 실패하게 된 원인은 모든 사람들에게 적용되는 글쓰기의 보편적이고 근원적인 특성을 찾고자 했기 때문이다. 그래서 쓰기 과정을 분절적이고 계층적인 것으로 나누었고, 그 세부 과정을 탐색했다. 그렇지만 이를 통해 얻게 된 연구 결과가 학생들의 쓰기 능력을 향상시키는 데 얼마나 효과적인 것인지에 대해서는 아직 분명하지가 않다. 오랜 인지적 연구에도 작문교육방법이 나아지지 않은 것은 초기 인지적 연구가 지닌 몇 가지 잘못된 시각에 원인이 있다. 그 중 하나는 사고가 형성된 이후 언어가 따라온다는 관점인데, 이는 실제 성인의 언어 사용과 맞지가 않다. 두 번째는 언어를 분석하는 것과 언어를 생산하는 것은 다른 문제라는 점인데, 실제 교사들은 인지적 연구 결과를 바로 작문 교육에 적용시키려고 한다. 언어 분석의 결과를 바로 언어 생산의 문제로 돌려서는 안 된다. 사실 인지적 연구를 통해 쓰기 능력을 향상시키기란 쉽지가 않다. 왜냐하면 한 편의 글을 쓰기 위해서는 개인이 지닌 총체적인 환경, 다시 말해 개인을 둘러싼 유, 무형의 모든 요소들이 통합적으로 관여되기 때문이다. 글을 쓰는 데는 개인뿐만 아니라 독자, 맥락, 문화, 공동체 등의 사회적 환경 모두가 영향을 미친다. 그러나 이런 단점 때문에 인지적 연구가 모두 무용하다고 말할 수는 없을 것이다. 인지적 연구를 통해 우리는 글을 쓰는 다원적이고, 역동적인 과정을 과학적으로 해명할 수가 있기 때문이다. 우리가 조심해야 할 것은 인지적 연구 결과를 보편적 규정이나 절대적 방법으로 생각하지는 말아야 한다는 점이다. 그리고 인지적 연구 결과를 쓰기 생산의 문제로 성급하게 돌리려고 하지 말아야 한다는 점이다.

영문 초록

In the field of composition studies, cognitive research is related to the pedagogical demand which students need to transform in the writing classroom. Cognitive research aims to transform student in the rhetorical situation, and improve their writing abilities. However, when looking back on the past 30 years, the writing classroom conditions and students’ writing abilities have not been improved. Rather, criteria for the “good writing” has become ambiguous and learning strategies are now more complicated than before. The reason why cognitive research failed to transform the writing pedagogy is that cognitive research had investigated upon universal principles of writing. As a result, the writing process is dissected segmentally and hierarchically to scrutinize the details of the process. However, it is still unclear to determine the efficiency of research findings on enhancing students’ writing abilities. The stagnation of educational methods, despite the long history of the cognitive research, is related to certain narrow perspectives that early cognitivist possessed. One such perspective demonstrates that language follows after the thought and this does not seem to concord with the true usage of language. Another thing to consider is that the language analysis is different from the language production - teachers in real life applicate cognitive research findings into writing education. In fact, it is not easy to enhance writing ability through cognitive research. Various factors within oneself, both material and non-material factors surrounding an individual are comprehensively associated in writing. As well as individualistic factors, collectivistic factors including the background of the reader, language context, the culture and characteristics of community also contribute to the writing process. Nevertheless, we cannot say that such drawbacks cause the cognitive research to be meaningless. Through cognitive research, we can scientifically explain the pluralistic and dynamic process of writing. What we should be aware is that cognitive research findings should not be regarded as a prime canons or a problem of text production.
