컬럼비아대학교 글쓰기센터의 문제해결방식과 국내대학 글쓰기센터의 방향에 대한 제언

국문 초록

이 연구는 국내대학의 글쓰기센터의 방향을 제안하는 것이다. 이를 위해 미국의 컬럼비아대학의 글쓰기센터의 문제해결방식을 조사하였고 국내 대학의 글쓰기센터에 활용할 수 있는 방안을 제시하고자 한다. 연구의 방법은 2015년 7월부터 8월까지 MIT, 브라운대학교, 하버드대학교, 콜럼비아대학교의 글쓰기센터를 방문하여 관계자들과 글쓰기센터의 방향에 대해 인터뷰했다. 그 중 뉴욕시(NYC)에 위치한 컬럼비아대학교의 글쓰기센터 운영방식과 문제해결 사례에 대해 글쓰기센터장과 인터뷰했고 향후 글쓰기센터의 협력적 모델에 관해 논의했다. 이를 토대로 한국대학의 글쓰기센터의 문제점과 해결방안을 제안하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 글쓰기센터의 공간과 운영방향에 있어 교내 다른 기관과의 협력이 필수적이다. 글쓰기상담은 글쓰기센터라는 제한된 공간을 넘어서 교내의 박물관, 도서관 등 학생들이 쉽게 이용할 수 있는 공간에서 이루어질 수 있어야 한다. 도서관의 독후감공모전에 있어서 글쓰기센터에서는 독후감의 심사나 독후감 쓰기와 같은 교육적 자원을 제공함으로써 도서관과 협력할 수 있다. 박물관과의 협력은 박물관의 기획전시와 함께 박물관 관람 소감문을 공모하고 글쓰기센터에서는 심사와 교육을 담당할 수 있다. 둘째, 다양한 상담사례와 해결방향에서는 글쓰기센터의 구성원들이 제기하는 애로사항을 공개적으로 수렴하여 공개적으로 해결할 수 있는 워크샵과 교육이 활성화 되어야 한다. 셋째, 인력의 문제와 해결방향은 글쓰기센터에 학부 고학년생이나 대학원생을 학습도우미로 활용하는 방법이 있다. 이들은 글쓰기과목의 성적우수자로 일정기간 글쓰기상담에 대한 교육을 이수한 후, 글쓰기센터의 내담자들을 상담하는 방법이다. 아울러 이들을 교육하고 글쓰기센터의 운영 실무를 담당한 정규직 인력의 확충이 필수적이다.

영문 초록

The study proposes the future direction of managing the writing centers at Korean universities. For this purpose, we investigated the problem-solving methods of the writing center at Columbia University, which will be applicable to the writing centers at Korean universities. The author visited the Writing Center at MIT, Brown University, Harvard University, Columbia University during summer of 2015 and conducted interviews with the directors. In particular, the interview with the director of the writing center at Columbia University gave the author the picture of the writing center operations and troubleshooting practices. It followed with the discuss about the future of the cooperative model of the writing center. Based on such activities, the author suggests the followings. First, it is essential to co-work with other organizations to reserve enough spaces and to establish the direction of the writing center. Writing consulting should be done not only in limited space of the writing center, but in spaces where students are is easily accessible, such as museums and libraries on campus. On the other hand, the writing center can provides library educational resources like screening in book report competition. The museum can cooperate with the writing center, in special exhibitions, by holding contest of museum trip essay - the writing center can screen writings and educate students. Second, the writing center should hold workshops and education for consultants to collect their experiences and difficulties to solve such problems in public. Third, the writing center can make use of seniors and graduate students as assistants, to improve understaffed writing center. We can pick student in high grade in writing course and make them play their role after clearing consulting courses. It is also essential to hire enough staffs who can train assistants and can manage the whole programs.
