일제 말기 이효석 소설의 미적 형상화 연구

국문 초록

이효석은 예술을 완성된 형태의 고정적 실체로 이해하지 않았던 예술지상주의 성향의 소설가다. 이효석의 작품은 시기마다 세계관의 편차가 큰 양상으로 나타난다. 이는 그동안 이효석의 연구가 그의 작품을 총체적으로 평가하는데 난관을 겪게 했던 요인이다. 그러나 그것은 그의 심미주의 특징에 천착했을 뿐, 이효석 작품의 미적 형상화 방식의 발생 원인과 의미망을 깊게 분석하지 못했던 탓이다. 이효석의 작품에서 드러나는 이상향에 대한 동경은 여러 가지 형태로 굴절되어 표현된다. 문학에서 이상향이라는 것은 지배 이데올로기에 대한 이데올로기적인 비판이라는 것을 감안할 때, 이효석의 미적 형상화 방식의 이상이란 지배 이데올로기 비판을 통해서 말해지는 것이다. 근대 세계에 진입한 사회는 탈자연화의 요구를 받는다. 그러나 오히려 순수문학 시기 이효석은 자연으로 회귀하는 듯 서정 소설을 창작 한다. 근대세계에 비순응적 태도를 보임으로써 미학적 절대주의를 추구했던 것이다. 생태학적 특권화라는 이데올로기를 통해서 정신적으로 망명할 돌파구를 마련했던 것이다. 그러나 그의 소설 창작 시기상 문제가 되는 것이 1940년 전후의 작품들인데, 이 시기 그는 표면상 친일문학으로 변절한 것처럼 보인다. 그러나 당대의 맥락을 고려하면서, 이효석 특유의 미학적 예술실험의 작법에 천착한다면 논의는 달라진다. 이효석이 고심했던 예술 작법에 초점을 맞출 때, 당대의 폭압적이고 비속한 현실을 알레고리적으로 형상화하여 비판한 작품들로 재평가할 수 있기 때문이다. 이에 본고는 1939년 《조광》에 연재된 『화분』과 다음 해에 출간된 『푸른 탑』을 중심으로 논의를 진행한다. 그리하여 이효석의 작품이 시대에 협력적이면서도 풍자적이고, 동시에 순응적이면서 비판적이지만 결코 허무주의에 빠지지 않고 그 나름대로의 돌파구를 동원했다는 사실을 확인한다.

영문 초록

Lee Hyo-Seok is a novelist who had the inclination of the art-for-art principle without understanding the art as fixed reality of a complete form. The literary works of Lee Hyo-Seok appear with the aspect of having great deviations of the world view for each and every period. This is the reason why studies of Lee Hyo-Seok have been experiencing many difficulties in evaluating his works holistically. However, that is attributable to the inability to make a deep analysis on the occurrences of the aesthetic figuration aspect as well as the semantic network of Lee Hyo-Seok’s works, delving only into his aestheticism characteristics. The yearning for utopia as revealed in Lee Hyo-Seok’s works is expressed in various refracted forms. Considering that the utopia in literature is the ideological criticism against the dominant ideology, Lee Hyo-Seok’s ideal of the aesthetical figuration aspect is discussed through criticising the dominant ideology. The society that has entered into the modern times is asked to stay away from naturalization. However, Lee Hyo-Seok creates lyrical novels that would seem to return to the nature rather in the times of pure literature. It was the aesthetical absolutism that was pursued by showing an attitude of non-compliance to the modern world. It was the breakthrough for seeking a mental asylum that has been arranged through the ideology of forming ecological prerogative. However, what matters as for the period of his novel writing is about the works of the several years before and after 1940, and in this period, he seems to have turned his coat superficially for pro-Japanese literature. However, when we delve deeply into Lee Hyo-Seok’s unique method of creating an aesthetical art experiment while considering the contemporary context, the discussion becomes varied. It is because his works can be reevaluated to be those of criticizing the contemporary oppressive and vulgar reality by shaping it algorithmically when the method of creating art, for which Lee Hyo-Seok has taken great pains, is to be focused upon. Hence, the discussion in this paper proceeds with its focus being placed on the 『Flowerpot』 published serially on ≪Jogwang (Morning Light)≫ and the 『Blue Tower』 published the next year. By doing so, the fact id identified to be that Lee Hyo-Seok’s works could mobilize the breakthrough in their own way even though they were sarcastic and cooperative with the times while they were also conforming and critical simultaneously, but never giving way to nihilism. Therefore, this paper places its focus upon making new evaluations with regard to the opinions on Lee Hyo-Seok’s literature which stood at the boundary between nationalism and cosmopolitanism in the colonial times.
