문화유산학에 대한 시론적 접근

국문 초록

본고에서는 문화유산학에서의 ‘문화유산’과 그 하위 개념으로 설정한 ‘유형문화재’ 및 ‘무형문화재’의 개념을 재정립하였다. 문화유산에는 유적건조물･유물･기록유산 등이 있고, 무형문화재･자연유산･국가등록문화재도 이 분류 안에 속한다. 유적건조물에는 유형의 문화유산이 포함되고, 유물의 형태는 배제된다. 실질적으로 유적, 유구는 주거지나, 무덤, 가마 등을 통칭하는 개념이다. 국내에서는 유적건조물을 국가 혹은 시･도 단위의 지방자치단체에서 선정하여 보호하고 있다. 중국 역시 정부기관에서 이동이 불가능한 유형문화재를전국･성･시･현급 중점 문화재 보호단위로 선정하여 보호하고 있다. 문화유산은 지정과 비지정으로 구분할 수 있고, 그중 정부 혹은 지차제가지정한 문화유산을 중심으로 대중에게 정보가 제공된다. 문화유산학의 학문적인 범주를 문화유산에 대한 조사･교육･보존･복원･활용 등으로 나누어 접근할 수 있고, 고고･역사･인류･민속･문명･예술･관광학 등 여러 학문의 융복합적인 학문으로도 이해할 수 있다. 이외에 의류･건축학 등의 학문이 문화유산학에 융복합되기도 하고, 역으로 문화유산학이 이 학문들에 속하기도 한다. 무엇보다 문화유산학의 개념에는 정부와 지자체가 지정혹은 등록한 문화유산이 포함되고, 지정 혹은 등록되지 않은 문화유산도 연구대상에 포함된다. 본고에서는 유적건조물을 집중적으로 탐구하였고, 그 결과 현대사회의 대중들은 지정된 문화유산에 집중하며, 비지정된 문화유산은 크게 주목받지 못하고 있다. 특히, 비지정된 지표 아래의 유적건조물은 관심도가 가장 낮다. 만약, 현대사회가 현대에 남겨진 문화유산을 보존 및 보호하지 않게 된다면 현대사회는 이전 사회의 문화유산만을 잃게 되는 것이 아니라, 현대사회의 문화와 문화유산도 잃어가게 될 것이다. 필자는 그 해결책이 문화유산학의 활성화라고 판단한다. 문화유산학의 궁극적인 목표는 현대사회 이전의 문화유산을 보존 및 보호하고, 현대사회가 남길 문화유산을 다음 세대에게 온전하게 물려주기 위함이다.

영문 초록

This study aims to define the term “cultural heritage” and its subordinate concepts, such as “tangible cultural heritage” and “intangible cultural heritage.” Tangible cultural heritage includes not only historic buildings, artifacts, documents and records, etc., but also intangible cultural heritage, natural heritage, and registered cultural heritage. Historic buildings exclude relics but include monuments and historic sites, such as habitats, tombs, palanquins, etc., which are evidence of tangible cultural heritage. In Korea, historic buildings are chosen and protected by the state or local governments of cities and provinces. In China too, immovable tangible cultural heritage is protected by the state, provinces, prefectures, and counties as part of cultural heritage protection units. In other words, cultural heritage can be classified as registered and unregistered heritage, with information for the public focused on registered cultural heritage. The academic category of cultural heritage studies can be classified into survey, education, preservation, restoration, and utilization of cultural heritage, and it can be understood as a multidisciplinary study involving the fields of archaeology, history, anthropology, folklore, civilization, art, and tourism. In addition, studies on apparels and architecture are also integrated with cultural heritage studies. Simultaneously, cultural heritage is also a part of all these fields of study. Thus, the concept of civilization includes the concept of cultural heritage, which in turn includes unregistered cultural heritage, and hence cultural heritage studies should involve studies on unregistered heritage. This study focuses on exploring historic buildings, and the findings show that the public in the modern society focus mainly on registered cultural heritage, while unregistered cultural heritage does not receive much attention, particularly unregistered historic buildings that exist underground. Multiple subsurface historic buildings have been damaged over the course of time, and if modern society does not preserve and protect the traces of a previous civilization, it will not only lose the cultural heritage associated with it but also the civilization itself. This problem can be resolved by promoting cultural heritage studies, whose goal is to preserve and protect the cultural heritage of previous civilizations and pass on the legacy to future generations.
