주희(朱熹)의 호상학(湖湘學) 비판에 관한 연구

국문 초록

24세에 공직을 시작하면서 公敎育 현장의 실태를 목도한 주희는 이를 계기로 본인및 모든 학인을 위한 바람직한 工夫論을 건립하려는 문제의식을 갖게 된다. 그 후 스승 李侗의 지도하에 道南學의 공부방법을 수행해보았으나 확실하게 얻은 것은 없었다. 스승의 서거 후 湖湘學을 익히면서 비로소 자신의 思惟에 의한 학설을 말하게 되는데 이 시기에는 사실상 호상학의 공부방법을 수용했다고 할 수 있다. 新儒學의 공부론을 정립해가는 과정에서 이렇게 中和舊說 시기에 호상학의 공부방법을 수용했던 주희는 40세에 中和新說을 확정한 이후로는 줄곧 호상학의 문제점을 지적하며 비판하였다. 그렇다고 호상학에 대한 주희의 비판을 호상학에 대한 전면적인 부정으로본다면 이는 적절하지 않다. 주희는 일관되게 主體的으로 사유해가는 가운데 자신의문제의식에 의거하여 새로운 공부론을 건립해갔던 것이고, 이 과정에서 호상학은 일정한 의미를 갖는다. 주희의 비판에는 호상학의 공부론을 오해한 부분도 있고, 한편으로 新儒學의 공부론이 어떠한 特長을 갖는지를 확인시켜 주는 부분도 있다.

영문 초록

Chu Hsi, who was first appointed a public educational supervisor at the age of twenty-four, decided to establish the optimal theory of moral cultivation for himself and for others, after he witnessed the actual state of public education. Afterwards, he attempted learning the necessary skills from the Dao-nan school under the guidance of Lee Tung, but there were no clear results. Chu Hsi finally established his own theory on these concepts after the death of his teacher, while studying the Doctrine of the Hu-xiang School. However, at this point, it can be said that he had actually accepted the theory of moral cultivation of the Hu-xiang School. Chu Hsi had partially accepted the theory of moral cultivation of the Hu-xiang School based upon the old theory of equilibrium and harmony while establishing the theory of moral cultivation from Neo-Confucianism. After confirming the new theory of equilibrium and harmony at the age of forty, he pointed out and criticized the underlying problems of the Hu-xiang School. However, it is inappropriate to say that Chu Hsi completely rejected all of the ideas proposed by the Hu-xiang School as he simultaneously criticized it. Chu Hsi was an independent thinker who established a new theory of moral cultivation based on his own keen, critical mind, and the Hu-xiang School played a fundamental role in instigating this process. Chu Hsi’ s criticisms contain somemisunderstandings on the theory of moral cultivation as defined by the Hu-xiang School, while still confirming the characteristics of the theory of moral cultivation as set out by Neo-Confucianism.
