정몽주 효행의 의의와 여묘(廬墓)설화 고찰

국문 초록

본고에서는 우리나라에서 여묘살이 정착에 있어 정몽주의 역할을 고찰하였으며, 아울러 설화를 통해 이렇게 정착된 여묘살이에 대한 사대부와 서민의 인식을 살피고자 하였다. 중국에서 유래한 여묘살이는 나말여초에 유입되어 고려말 정몽주에 의해 정착되었으며, 조선전기에는 『삼강행실도』 등을 통해 장려할 정도로 숭상하였다. 이는 주자 『가례』와 상충되어 논란거리가 되었으나 이이, 이황 등이 그 필요성을 주장하였고 송인, 김성일 등이 정몽주를 내세워 그 의의를 강조하였으며, 김장생의 『가례집람』이 이를 수용하여 우리나라에 맞는 상례로 삼았다. 사대부가 향유한 문헌설화에서는 여묘살이의 어려움을 극복할 수 있도록 하늘이 도와준다는 효행 장려 설화가 주류를 이룬다면 서민의 구비설화에서는 호랑이의 도움을 받기 보다는 오히려 호랑이를 구해주거나 여묘살이로 집안을 돌보지 못해 가짜 남편에 의해 부인이 죽음에 처하는 설화를 통해 여묘살이에 대한 부정적 인식을 드러내고 있음을 밝혔다.

영문 초록

This study set out to investigate the roles of Jeong Mong-ju in the settlement of the Living by the Grave custom in Korea and examine the perceptions of the custom among the nobility and common people through its tales. Being passed down from China, the Living by the Grave custom was introduced in Korea between the end of Silla and the beginning of Goryeo and settled down by Jeong Mong-ju at the end of Goryeo. The practice was so respected during the former half of Joseon that it was encouraged in books including Samganghaengsildo. The practice was controversial as it went against Zhu Xi s Family Rites. Lee Yi and Lee Hwang, however, insisted on its need. Song In and Kim Seong-il emphasized its significance by citing the case of Jeong Mong-ju. Kim Jang-saeng accepted it in his Garyejipram, taking it as a funeral rite fit for the country. In the literature of tales enjoyed by the nobility, the mainstream was tales that encouraged filial piety by telling stories in which the Heaven would help those who were in the difficult times of Living by the Grave. In oral tales enjoyed by common people, most stories reveal negative perceptions of the custom by depicting characters saving the tiger rather than getting help from it and wives being killed by fake husbands for not taking care of the house due to the custom.
