‘무명’과 ‘무자격’에 접근하기 위하여

국문 초록

이 논문은 다양한 기록을 경유하여 한 무명 여인의 삶에 접근하고, 이를 통해 식민지기 여성운동을 재구하고자 하는 시론적 성격의 글이다. 그 일환으로 이 글은 전등지라는 한 여인의 삶에 주목한다. 본고에서 이 여인의 삶은 남편에 관한 기록과 근화회 관련 기록으로 재구된다. 도쿄에 거주하던 시절 그녀는 남편의 사회적 지위를 적극적으로 전유하는 모습을 보인다. 그러나 남편과 함께 도미한 후 근화회에서 활동, 교류하는 가운데 가부장제의 문법을 전면 거부하기에 이른다. 이는 김마리아를 비롯한 여성 독립운동가들이 동시대 여성에게 미친 영향력을 상상할 수 있는 장면이다. 김마리아는 애국부인회 취지문(1919)을 통해 여성에게 주어진 애국의 자격과 권리를 역설한 바 있다. 그러나 근화회(1928) 개회사에서는 여성에게 부과된 열악한 지위를 의식하며 이전보다 소극적인 자세를 보인다. 이러한 변화를 야기한 원인으로는 김마리아의 신체와 정신을 훼손했던 제국의 폭력, 훼손된 신체를 반복적으로 재현했던 미디어, 이를 바라보는 대중의 관음증적 욕망, 여성을 주변화했던 민족운동의 내부, 유학 생활 중 형성된 아시아 여성으로서의 자각 등을 들 수 있다. 최종적으로 김마리아는 민족의 아내로서 교육에 투신했고 미국에 홀로 남은 전등지는 신문에 “류태경 부인”으로만 등장한다. 전등지와 김마리아의 생애는 조선인 여성이 마주했던 제국과 피식민, 가부장제의 벽을 상징적으로 드러내고 있다.

영문 초록

This paper sets out to approach the life of an unknown woman through the records of others, and thereby to rebuild the colonial women s movement. To this end, it focuses on the life of a woman named Deungji Jeon. This woman s life is reconstituted through the records of her husband and of the Keunwha Association, which was founded in 1928 by Maria Kim. While living in Tokyo, Deungji Jeon appropriated her husband s social status and patriarchal ideology. However, after going to America with her husband, while working and interacting at the Keunwha Association, she completely rejected the patriarchal ideology. These circumstances let us imagine the impact of female independence activists, including Maria Kim. The latter emphasized the patriotic qualifications and rights given to women through the Korean Patriotic Women s Association, but she became more passively conscious of the inadequate position imposed on women at the Keunwha Association. The causes of this change involved the imperial violence that impaired Maria Kim s body and mind, the media that repeatedly represented the damaged body, the voyeuristic mass desire for the damaged body, the core of the national movement that marginalized women, and her identity as an Asian woman during studying in America. Eventually, Maria Kim, as a wife of the nation, devoted herself to education. Deungji Jeon remained alone in the United States and was only referred to as the wife of Taekyung Yoo in newspapers. The lives of Deungji Jeon and Maria Kim reveal the limits of the Japanese Empire and patriarchs.
