국문 초록

조선어 연구를 과학적 방법론으로 정착시키려고 했던 노력은 꽤 이른 시기부터 발견되는데, 특히 1920~30년대에 벌어진 여러 가지 표기법 관련 논쟁에서 상대의 논리를 ‘비과학적’이라고 비난하고 과학적 언어 연구란 바로 이런 것이라고 주장하는 대목에서 그러한 경향이 잘 드러난다. 그런데 이러한 논쟁을 전형적으로 보여주는 것이 바로 1926~27년 사이에 『동광』지에서 벌어진 자산 안확과 주시경 제자들 간의 논전이다. 안확은 잘 알려져 있다시피 언어는 물론이고 문학, 정치, 음악, 무술 등 각 방면에서 자신의 독특한 견해를 피력한 ‘국학자’인데, 그는 특히 꽤 이른 시기부터 주시경의 학설을 줄곧 비판해 온 것으로도 유명하다. 주시경에 대한 안확의 이러한 문제제기는 ‘언어란 무엇인가’, ‘언어학이란 어떠해야 하는가’라는 이른바 메타언어학적 쟁점이 형성되는 데 기여했고 당대의 조선어 연구에도 일정한 자극을 준 것으로 보인다. 이 글에서는 『동광』지에서의 논쟁을 중심으로 ‘과학으로서의 언어학’을 주장한 안확의 조선어 연구가 궁극적으로 지향하는 바는 과연 무엇이었으며 그것에 내재하고 있는 난점, 즉 과학으로서의 언어학이 처한 곤란함은 어떠한 것인지를 검토해 보고자 한다.

영문 초록

The efforts to establish the study of Korean with a scientific methodology was discovered from a fairly early age. Specially in the argument relating with various notations that happened in the 1920s to 1930s, such efforts were well exposed where criticising their partners for their ‘unscientific’ reasoning and asserting that scientific language studies were exactly what they were studying. Among these arguments, the typical example showing this is that the dispute between Jasan An Hwak and the disciples of Ju Si-gyeong in the DongKwang paper in the 1926 to 1927. An-Hwak is a well-known classical scholar of the country expressing his own unique opinions on various directions of not only language, but also literature, politics, music, arts and etc. And he is also famous for constantly criticizing the theory of Ju Si-gyeong from fairly early times. An-Hwak’s raising questions like this contributed to forming so called meta-linguistical issues covering ‘What is language?’, ‘What the Linguistics should be?’ and it appeared to have stimulated the studies of Korean in those days. In this study, with the focus of argements in the DongKwang paper, we want to review what ultimate direction the study of Korean by An Hwank who asserted ‘Linguistics as a Science’ was really headed for and what were the Difficulties existing inside.
