프랑스 국립도서관 소장 「조선전도(Carte de la Corée)」 연구

국문 초록

김대건 신부가 제작한 「조선전도」는 우산도와 서울의 로마자 표기가 최초로 기재된 지도로 잘 알려져 있다. 최근 들어 이 지도는 프랑스 국립도서관에 원본 및 사본 2매 등 총 3장이 소장되어 있음이 밝혀졌다. 이에 본 연구에서는 이 「조선전도」들의 프랑스로 전래 과정, 지도의 저본 탐색, 그리고 기재된 지명의 유형을 분류하였다. 연구 결과 김대건 신부에 의해 「조선전도」가 만들어진 후 파리외방전교회 선교사 메스트르에 의해 사본이 제작되었고, 이후 원본 및 사본지도들이 프랑스 해군 수로국 및 프랑스 총영사 몽티니 등을 통해 프랑스 국립도서관에 이관되었음을 파악하였다. 「조선전도」의 저본지도의 경우 기존 연구들에서 저본으로 추정한 「동국대지도」 및 「해좌전도」의 경우 저본일 가능성이 낮음을 확인하였고, 영남대 박물관 소장 「팔도전도」가 지도의 크기나 해안선의 형태, 섬의 묘사 방식 등에서 가장 유사한 지도임을 확인하였다. 마지막으로 3매의 「조선전도」에 기재된 지명의 경우 원본에는 총 400개의 지명이 사본 2종에는 각각 376개 및 373개의 지명이 존재함을 확인하였고, 특히 섬 명칭과 군현명칭이 지명 중 다수를 차지하고 있음을 확인하였다. 이를 통해 「조선전도」가 가톨릭 신부의 해로를 통한 조선으로의 이동 루트 파악 및 가톨릭 신부들이 조선에 도착한 이후 포교 전략을 수립하는데 필요한 지리정보를 확보하기 위해 제작되었을 가능성을 확인하였다.

영문 초록

It is well know that Carte de la Corée, drawn by Father André Kim, is the first map including the romanized toponyms of Ousan and Seoul. Recently, it has been revealed that the National Library of France(BNF) holds three maps, including the original and two copies. This author research the process of these maps of transferring to France, investigate the Korean original map, and the types of geographical names written on these three maps. As a result, it is revealed that three maps were transferred to the BNF via the Dépôt des cartes et plans de la Marine, the Service hydrographique de la Marine and the consul general Montigny. By comparing the shape of the coastlines, rivers and islands, Paldojeondo of Yeongnam University was recognized as the most similar Korean map to Carte de la Corée. Finally, in the case of toponym listed in three maps of Carte de la Corée, a total of 400 geographical names were confirmed to exist in the original map, and 376 and 373 geographical names in two copies respectively. In particular, it was confirmed that among these toponyms, the name of the island and the county names were mainly written in these maps. This fact imply that Carte de la Corée was designed to help the Catholic priests to find sea routes and to establish mission strategies after their arrival in Korea.
