『한국지명총람』(1966-1986)의 수록 고지도 연구

국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 우리나라의 대표적인 지명 사전인 『한국지명총람』(1966-1986)에 수록된 고지도를 분석하는데 있다. 전체 197곳의 도･시(군)에 213점의 지도가 수록되어 있으며 47곳에는 누락되어 있다. 시(군)별로 1점의지도를 원칙으로 하고 있으나 1914년 통합된 고을의 지도를 함께 수록하면서 일부에서는 2~4점이 실려 있다. 누락된 곳은 도시화로 행정구역이 분리됨에 따라 중복을 피하기 위한 경우이다. 지도 유형을 보면 각 도의 앞부분에 『대동여지도』를 배치하였다. 시(군)의 군현지도는 편찬 초기에는 다양한 유형의 지도를 수록하였으나 후기에는 『여지도서』를 주로 사용하였다. 이는 당시 이 책이 영인 보급되어 자료 수집이 용이하였기 때문이다. 사전의 편찬 당시의 출판 환경을 볼 때 고지도를 수록하려는 기획 시도는 높이 평가된다. 그러나 지도 편집과 설명에서 적지 않은 오류를 빚고 있다. 원본 지도를 변형하거나 임의로 「지도제」를 기재한 경우도 적지 않으며, 서지 정보도 실제와 다른 경우가 많다. 지명 설명에서 고지도를 인용한 경우는 없으며 단지 시(군)의 역사지리적인 이미지를 보여주는데 그치고 있다. 이는 고지도 지식이 부족한 상태로 수록한 것에 기인한다. 지명 설명에서 역사성이 중요함을 비추어 볼 때 차후 기명사전 편찬에 고지도 수록 방법이 심도있게 논의되어야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper analyzes the contents and types of old maps used in the Dictionary of Korean Place Name(韓國地名總攬, 1966~1986) which is considered as a representative dictionary of Korean geographical names. A total of 197 provinces and counties contain 213 maps, while 47 counties are missing. In principle, one map is included for each county, but in some counties 2~4 county old maps were inserted because administrtive districts were intergrated in early 20th century. In some counties, maps are missing due to avoid overlapping as some districts are separated by urbanization especially in the metropolitan area. In terms of the type of old map, most of the provinces used the Daedongyeojido(『大東輿地圖』, 1861). In case of count maps, various types of map were used in early stage of publication. But in the latter phase, maps in the photocopy of Yeojidoseo(『輿地圖書』, 18C) were mainly used. Including old maps in gazetteer in the beginning of publication(1960s) is highly respectable in terms of poor conditions. But, the editing and explanation of the map is causing considerable errors. In many cases, images of original map has been modified or map title has been entered arbitrarily, and the bibliography information is often different from the facts. Place names in old maps are not used in the explanation of geographical names at all. Role of old maps in this dictionary is showing only the simple historical geography of counties. Those are due to the lack of knowledge of old maps. Given the importance of historicality in the description of geographical names, method of including of old map in dictionary should be discsussed in depth.
