양반사회 개념의 탄생과 확산, 그 사학사적 고찰

국문 초록

국내 역사학계에서는 고려의 지배층을 흔히 귀족이라 부르고 그 사회를 귀족사회라고 성격 규정한다. 그런데 조선에 대해서만큼은 귀족사회라 부르지 않고, 양반사회라는 별도의 용어를 사용한다. 이는 조선을 지배한 양반의 성격을 귀족으로 보지 않기 때문이다. 혈통에 기초한 집안 배경보다는 양반의 학자적 관료라는 성격을 최대한 부각함으로써, 이전 고려시대의 귀족과는 다른 성격의 지배층이 건설한 진일보한 사회라는 의미로 양반사회라는 용어를 사용한다. 그런데 중국 학계와 일본 학계에서는 동시대(15~19세기) 자국을 각각 ‘선스[紳士]사회’나 ‘사무라이[侍]사회’ 라 부르지 않는다. 그렇다면 국내 학계에서는 왜 조선을 굳이 양반사회라고 특별히 성격을 부여하여 부를까? 양반사회라는 용어는 언제 탄생하였으며, 어떤 과정을 밟아 유통·확산하였을까? 이 비평논문에서는 먼저 양반의 개념과 성격을 둘러싼 학계의 논쟁을 간략하게 정리한다. 양반 관련 논쟁의 추이는 양반사회 용어 이해와 불가분의 관계에 있기 때문이다. 다음으로, 양반사회라는 개념어가 1967년에 처음 등장하였으며, 이후 70년대와 80대를 거치면서 널리 유통·확산했음을 연구사 정리 차원에서 시대별로 살핀다. 또한, 1990년대부터 양반사회의 의미가 다양화하면서 그 용례가 분기하는 현상을 추적한다. 마지막으로, 해외 학계의 연구 동향까지 포함하여 양반사회라는 개념어를 사학사 차원에서 조명한다.

영문 초록

Korean historians regard Koryŏ(918-1392) as an aristocratic society because the ruling elites of Koryŏ can be characterized as aristocrats. On the other hand they hardly call Chosŏn(1392-1910) an aristocratic society but characterize it as a yangban society, suggesting that the ruling elites of Chosŏn was no longer aristocratic. Regarding the characteristics of yangban, they emphasize that yangban entered the officialdom mostly by passing the civil service exams on his own merits rather than family prestige. For this reason, yangban society signifies that new ruling elites called scholar-officials emerged in the course of the Koryŏ-Chosŏn transition in the late 1300s and founded the new Chosŏn dynasty that made a great step forward in terms of the bureaucratic features of ruling elites and their government system. Interestingly enough, however, in China they never call the Ming and Qing a ‘shēnshi society.’ In Japan the term of ‘samurai society’ has never been circulated among scholars, either. Why do they nevertheless call Chosŏn a yangban society in Korea? Were Koryŏ and Chosŏn totally different societies from each other? When was the term ‘yangban society’ born and spread easily among scholars? This review article first examines the scholarly controversy over the characteristics of yangban to better understand the concept of yangban society. It also verifies that the term of yangban society was first used in 1967, circulated wide in the 1970s and 1980s, and the use of the term was diversified from the 1990s on. With emphasis on the birth and wide circulation of the term ‘yangban society,’ this article examines the terminology of yangban society from a historiographical perspective.
