이황과 이익의 상·제례 예설 비교

국문 초록

이 논문은 이황과 이익의 상·제례 예설을 廬墓·返魂, 服制·時俗, 神 主·봉사대수, 宗法 인식을 중심으로 비교하고 그 예학사적 의미를 모색한글이다. 이황과 이익의 상·제례 예설의 同異를 표로 정리하면 다음과 같다. 두 巨儒의 상·제례 예설을 분석한 결과, 이황과 이익 모두 禮의 인습이나 관성보다 ‘禮를 관통하는 본연의 의미’에 집중했다. 이는 ‘神魂 중심의상·제례 예설’과 ‘종법의 원칙 강조’에서 확인할 수 있다. 반면, 이황과 이익은 ‘禮의 접근 위치와 방향’에서 차이를 보였다. 이는 ‘4대 봉사’와 ‘矯俗에대한 태도’에서 뚜렷하게 드러난다. 여묘·반혼·신주·종법에 대한 예설을 통해 이황-이익의 예설 계승 양상을 확인할 수 있으며, 이황과 이익의 정치적·사회경제적 격차와 가문의 위상은 ‘16세기 예교 담지자의 시대적 사명’과 ‘18세기 실세한 사족의 신분적변별’이라는 시대적 차이를 의미한다. 이황과 이익의 상·제례 예설은 장기지속의 예학사적 시각에서 볼 때 ‘정통과 의리의 확립’을 특징으로 하는 조선 중기 예학이 ‘時宜에 따른 다각적인 禮의 변화’를 모색했던 조선 후기 예학으로 轉化해가는 커다란 흐름을드러낸다고 볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper compares the theory of rites on funeral rites and ancestral rites of Yi Hwang and Yi Ik, and seeks its meaning in ritual history. According to the analysis of the two Confucian scholars theory of rites on funeral rites and ancestral rites, both Yi Hwang and Yi Ik focused on the original meaning of penetrating rite rather than on conventionality or inertia. This can be verified in “the theory of rites on funeral rites and ancestral rites focused on divine spirit[sinhon, 神魂] and ‘emphasizing the principles of the agnatic principle[jongbeop, 宗法].’ On the other hand, Yi Hwang and Yi Ik showed differences in ‘the approaching position and direction of rite.’ This is evident in ‘the ancestral services of four generations’ and ‘the attitude toward edifying customs.’ The theory of rites on funeral rites and ancestral rites of Yi Hwang and Yi Ik reveals a large trend of transformation and development of mid Joseon dynasty’s study of ritual, which features ‘establishment of legitimacy and righteousness,’ into the late Joseon dynasty’s ritual history, which were characterized by ‘multilateral change of rite according to circumstances’ from a long-term perspective.
