고전교육의 쟁점과 사례 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 국내 대학의 고전교육을 둘러싼 쟁점들을 살펴보고 바람직한 고전교육의 방향을 제시하고 이를 실천하는 것을 목표로 한다. 이를 위해 연구자는 D대학교 고전교육으로서 <클라시카> 교과목 운영의 성과를 설문을 통해 측정하였다. 설문 결과 수강생들은 고전교육의 목표와 지향점에 대해 전반적 으로 만족하였다. 하지만 조별로 이루어지는 수업방법에 대해서는 ‘보통’의 응답을 많이 보임으로써 수업을 설계할 때 교수자가 교수법에 대한 고민을 하여야 함을 시사한다. 한편 연구자는 2019년 2학기 진행된 <클라시카, 호메로스, 일리아드&오딧세이아>의 사례를 통해 고전교육은 인성교육 혹은 사고와 표현 교육을 위한 수단이 아니라 고전교육 본연의 목표와 방향성을 설정하여 실행해야 함을 주장한다. 고전교육은 첫째, 아이러니적 읽기를 통해 비판적이고 창의적인 사고의 확장으로서 시행되어야 한다. 학생들이 스스로 질문을 던지고 동료 학생들이 그 질문에 답하게 함으로써 텍스트에 대한 비판적인 안목을 기를 수 있는 활동이 이루어져야 한다. 뿐만 아니라 고전교육은 삶에 기반한 재맥락화 교육으로서 이루어져야 한다. 즉 학생들은 자신이 읽은 텍스트에 비추어 자신과 타자의 삶을 성찰하고 자신이 속한 공동체의 삶을 제대로 바라볼 수 있어야 한다. 이를 위해 학생들은 고전텍스트에 몰입하여야 한다. 몰입도를 높이기 위한 방법으로서 연구자는 작가(실제는 교수자)의 편지에 답장 쓰기, 역할을 정하여 서신 교환하기, 팀별 텍스트 요약과 재구성, 시나리오 쓰기 등을 제안하였고 실제 수업 시간에 이를 실천하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine some of the issues surrounding classical education in Korean universities, as well as to suggest the desirable direction that classical education should be taking. To this end, the researcher measured the performance of the curriculum through a questionnaire as it appears in the classical education department at D University. As a result of the survey, students were generally satisfied with the goal and direction of their classical education. However, the method of grouping by group shows a lot of normal responses, suggesting that instructors should think about their teaching methods more closely when designing their classes. In the case of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, both of which were taught in the second semester of 2019, the researcher stressed that the goal of the classical education is neither the means of character education nor of communication education. Firstly, classical education should be implemented as an extension of critical and creative thinking through ironic reading. Activities should be developed that allow students to raise their own critical questions about the text by asking themselves questions and then having their fellow students answer them. In addition, classical education should be implemented as life-based learning and re-contextualization education. In other words, students should be able to reflect on both their lives, and the lives of other people, based on the text they are reading, and to see the life of their community in those texts. To do this, students must immerse themselves in classical texts. As a way to increase the degree of immersion, the researcher suggested writing a reply to the writer (actually a professor), exchanging correspondences by assigning roles, summarizing and reconstructing texts in teams, and having students write their own scenarios.
