An Eco-Ethical Project of “Becoming” a Plant: On Han Gang’s The Vegetarian

국문 초록

한강의 『채식주의자』는 2016년 맨부커상을 수상한 이후 국제적으로 문학적 명성을 얻었지만 여전히 논쟁적인 작품이다. 단순히 채식주의를 실천하는 것을 넘어 거식을 선택함으로써 문자 그대로 식물이 되고자 는 한 여성의 형상은 익숙한 사회학적 상상력이나 휴머니즘적 시각으로는 접근될 수 없다. 이 작품이 던지는 급진적 의미는 ‘섹스’와 ‘젠더’를 구분하고 사회문화적 구성물로서 젠더에 초점을 맞추는 현재 지배적인 페미니즘 담론을 통해서도 해석될 수 없다. 이 논문은 이 작품이 제기하는 급진적 문제설정에 다가가려면 성차화된 존재로서 한 여성이 비인간 생명과의 연대를 위해 윤리적 변신을 시도하는 포스트휴먼 식물주의적 관점을 채택해야 한다고 주장한다. 작중 여주인공이 시도하는 윤리적 변신은 협소한 인간공동체의 경계를 넘어선다. 그것은 더 큰 생명세계에서 서로 연결된 상호의존적 존재로서 인간 존재와 비인간존재의 연속성에 기초한 대안공동체에 대한 열망을 담고 있다. 작가 한강은 성적 에너지와 생명력이 폭력성으로 나타나지 않는 존재양식으로서 식물성에 주목하고, 이 식물성으로의 문명의 전환을 이루기 위해서는 여성주의적 저항이 필요하다고 말하고 있다. 작중 여주인공이 보여주는 죽음을 불사하는 도저한 저항은 고대 그리스 비극 속 안티고네의 현대 한국판이라 할 수 있다. 이 논문은 『채식주의자』를 인류세 시대 포스트휴먼 에코 페미니즘의 문학적 성취로 해석되어야 한다고 주장한다.

영문 초록

The Vegetarian, a novel of contemporary Korean female writer Han Gang, is controversial, though it has gained a literary reputation after it won the Manbooker International Prize in 2016. The figuration of a woman “becoming” a plant by choosing anorexsia beyond vegetarianism can not be easily understood by sociological imagination or from humanistic perspective. Its radical implication cannot be read, either, by a dominant form of feminism separating gender from sex and placing its critical focus on the gender system as a socio-cultural formation. This essay argues that the meaning of The Vegetarian needs to be interpreted in the perspective of an ethical metamorphosis for solidarity with non-human lives made by a woman as a sexuate being. This ethical metamorphosis is made beyond the narrow boundary of human community. It aspires for a new alternative human community based on the continuum between human and non-human beings as interconnected and interdependent members of a great living world. Han Gang pays attention to vegetality as an ethical mode of being whose sexual energy and life force do not require aggression and violence. This essay claims that The Vegetarian is a literary accomplishment of the posthuman eco-feminism in the Anthropocen era.
