국문 초록

러일전쟁 110주년을 맞이하여 우리는 이 전쟁의 역사적 교훈과 의미를 되돌아보지 않을 수 없다. 이런 문제들에 해답을 얻기 위해서, 본 연구는 리뷰논문으로서, 러일전쟁 110주년을 맞이하여 과거 10년동안의 20여편의 관련 연구논문들과 저술들을 통해서 연구업적의 동향을 파악하려는 것이다. 러일전쟁 100주년인 2004년을 전후로 하여 학술세미나와 국제학술대회 등을 통해 러일전쟁 연구가 활성화되고는 있으나, 불행하게도, 역사학계에서는 청일전쟁이나 한국전쟁에 비해 연구업적이 많지 않은 편이다. 주지하다시피, 러일전쟁은 우리 민족에게 식민지라는 주권상실의 가장 큰 불행을 안겨준 재앙적 사건이었을 뿐만 아니라, 1차대전으로 가는 원인을 제공했던 제국주의 전쟁이었다. 또한 러일전쟁은 유럽대륙을 대변하는 러시아와 아시아의 신흥강국 일본의 패권다툼이었다. 그러나 일본은 영국으로부터 군사적, 재정적, 외교적 지원을 받고 있었고 미국도 전쟁초기에 일본을 지원했고, 러시아의 배후에는 프랑스가 재정적으로 지원했던 대리전쟁이었다. 구체적으로는 본론은 7개의 쟁점으로 분류되었다. 러일전쟁의 성격, 원인과 책임론, 전쟁과정과 군사사 및 첩보사의 측면, 고종과 한국정부의 대응책, 미국과 러시아가 본 러일전쟁, 포츠머스 회담과 카츠라-태프트 협정, 그리고 전쟁에 대한 인식과 러일전쟁이후의 연구 등 쟁점별로 나누어 검토하여 정리하고 향후 러일전쟁 연구에서 글로벌 히스토리를 추구하기 위해서 연구의 바람직한 방향에 대해서 권고와 제안을 할 것이다.

영문 초록

As encountering with the 110th anniversary of the Russo-Japanese War, we should reconsider the historical meaning and lessons of this war. In order to obtain these questios, this study is intended to review more 20 articles including several books which have been published from 2004 to 2014 about the research on the Russo-Japanese War. The research and study on the Russo-Japanese War could be able to be activated around in 2004, 100th anniversary of the Russo-Japanese War by way of the academic seminars and international conferences. Unfortunately, the quantity of study on the war was not so much abundant as the those of study on the Chinese-Japanese War and the Korean War. As we know, the Russo-Japanese War has brought about not only the result of the Japanese colonization of the Korean Peninsular, but also the great change of the balance of power in the Far East. In addition, the war was widely regarded as the imperialistic warfare between the big rivalry of the European traditional Continental Empire and the Asiatic rising militant state toward the First World War. However, the war was a kind of ‘Representative War’, because Japan was strongly assisted diplomatic, financial and military supports from the Great Britain and even during the early wartime, the United States secretly supported Japan, but Russia was supported financially by France. Concretely, this study would deal with seven special subjects; the reasons of the outbreak of war, the characters of the war, King Kojong’s response and preparedness, the military strategy and its aspect and intelligence of the war, the American and Russian perceptions of the war, and finally the Portsmouth Conference and the Katsura-Taft memo, etc. And finally I would like to suggest or remark upon some desirable directions upon the study of Russo-Japanese War within the global context of international history in the future.
