국문 초록

프랑스인의 집단기억 속에 특별한 위치를 차지하고 있는 제1차 세계대전이 올해로 정확히 100주년을 맞이했다. 전체 사망자수와 참전군인 대비 사망자 비율, 총 인구 대비 사망자 비율이 다른 어느 참전국보다도 높았기에 전쟁의 의미가 각별했던 프랑스는 그 어느 국가들보다 열성적으로 100주년을 기억하고 기념하고자 했다. 본 논문은 역사상 처음으로 ‘세계대전(World War. Guerre mondiale)’이라는 칭호가 붙은 이 전쟁 자체에 대한 분석은 아니다. 그보다는 제1차 세계대전이 시간의 흐름 속에 후세대에 의해 어떻게 인식되고, 경험되며, 기억되는지에 대한 연구이다. 100주년을 기념하여 등장한 수없이 많은 관련 자료들과 기념행사를 살펴봄으로써 제1차 세계대전, 특별히 프랑스의 ‘14-18 전쟁’의 기념을 둘러싼 논의와 평가에 대해 고찰해보고자 하는 것이다. 제1차 세계대전의 100주년 기념은 프랑스 사회를 강하게 결집하는 거대한 약속임을 알렸다. 프랑스가 경험했던 고난과 승리, 패배의 이름으로 프랑스인들은 그들을 하나로 묶는 역사에 대한 인식과 공동의 운명을 통해 결집하고자 했다. 대대적인 국가적 기념을 통해 프랑스는 사회 전체가 참여했던 전쟁에 대한 이해와, 이 기억을 오늘날의 프랑스인에게 전수하는 문제, 전쟁을 경험하고 희생한 이들에 대한 추모 등과 같은 매우 중요한 여러 기억의 쟁점들을 다루고자 했다.

영문 초록

The First World War, which hold a special place in the collective memory of the French celebrated the centenary this year. As it has the number of total deceased, the deceased ratio compared to War soldiers, and the deceased ratio compared to total population higher than any other groups, France wanted to remember and commemorate the 100th anniversary more enthusiastically than those in any country. This paper is not an analysis for the war itself attached to the title of World War for the first time in history. Rather, it is the research into how the First World War is recognized, experienced and memorized by future generations in the flow of time. By looking at the celebrations to commemorate the anniversary with a number of related materials, this paper particularly wants to study the discussion and evaluation over the celebration of ‘14 –18 war’ in France. The 100th anniversary of the First World War has announced that it is a huge commitment to rally French society strongly. In the name of hardship, triumph and defeat, the French tried to unite themselves through the awareness of history and the fate of community tying them together. Through the national commemoration, France wanted to deal with lots of issues of memory such as the understanding of the war that the whole society participated in, the problem of how to pass on this memory to today’s French, the memorial for those who have experienced war and sacrificed and so on.
