조상신화와 민족정체성

국문 초록

본 논문은 신화?기억과 민족정체성의 연관성을 살펴보았다. 또한 바레스의 민족의식과 민족정체성의 핵심인 ‘토지와 죽은자들(la terre et les morts)’에서 ‘죽은자들’의 문제를 조상신화와 연관시켜 그 의미를 살펴보았다. 세대는 알 수 없지만 죽은자들이 후손들에게 남겨주는 목소리는 역사적 교훈을 담고 있다. 그래서 바레스가 죽은자들의 목소리에서 얻게 된 것은 전통이고 이 전통으로부터 규율, 수호신, 용기, 그리고 지식을 얻었다고 말한다. 다른 또 한 가지는 프랑스인들의 도덕적 통합이었다. 프랑스의 갈라진 사회에서, 바레스는 프랑스인들이 민족정체성을 자각하고 개혁과 새로운 미래에 대한 전망을 희구했다. 바레스를 통해 조상신화는 ‘우리가 누구인지’에 대해서 알려주며, 세대를 거듭하여 우리의 조상과 후손 그리고 그 사이에 있는 우리를 연결해주는 하나의 고리와 연대 의식을 만들어준다는 점에서 중요하다. 또한 우리가 우리 자신을 발견한다면 ‘우리가 어디에 있는지’, ‘우리가 무엇이 되어야 하는지’에 대해서 알려준다는 점에서도 중요하다. 이런 점에서 조상신화는 민족정체성을 형성하는 기틀이 된다.

영문 초록

This study aims to explain the association between myth and national identity. And then, it studied the national consciousness of Barres and the problem of the dead(“les morts”) as a key of his national identity. In addition, I tried to grasp the meaning of ancestor myth connected with them. Even if one could not know them, the voice of the dead might convey one message to the descendant: that is tradition, and from it Barres got discipline, genius, courage, and knowledge. The other massage is the moral unity of French. In the context of divided society, Barres hoped French became aware of their national identity and the future prospect of France. In this regard, ancestor myth instructs ‘who are we?’, and connects our ancestor to our descendant. In addition, it gives national solidaire conscience to us. If we hope to found ourselves, it would inform us ‘where are we?’, ‘what we would be?’ In conclusion, ancestor myth will be a foundation for forming the national identity.
