국문 초록

본 논문의 목적은, 최근 여러 기회에 주요하게 제시된 ‘바다에서 보는 역사’(또는 ‘해앙사’)의 연구 범위와 실행 방법을 확장하고 다양화하려는 목적으로 ‘대서양사’ 분야의 대표적인 미국 역사가 마커스 레디커(Marcus Rediker)의 역사관과 그의 연구 방법을 살펴보는 것이다. 실제로 그는 “근대 초기 대서양의 아래로부터의 역사”를 실천하는 역사가로 유명하며 자신의 연구 저서로 수많은 학술상을 수상했다. 그는 그보다 “대항해 시대를 잘 아는 역사가는 별로 없을 것”이라는 높은 평판을 받고 있다. 그래서 본 논문은 그의 대표작 4개에 주로 기초해, 에릭 홉스봄 등의 논의에 근거한 ‘아래로부터의 역사’와 미셸 푸코의 배정의에 입각한 배에 대한 공간 개념에 기반을 둔 그의 역사 연구 방법을 살 펴본다. 그리고 근대 초기 대서양 선상세계와 자본주의 체제의 등장을 연결 짓는 그의 서술 내용을 살핀다. 마커스 레디커는 2000년대 이래 한국에서는 시대에 뒤진 것으로 종종 치부되던 ‘아래로부터의 역사’를 실행해온 점에서 한국의 역사가들에게 많은 시사점을 제공한다. 그는 ‘아래로부터의 역사’가 여전히 유효한 역사연구 방법이자 시각임을 보여주며, 바다와 배에 대한 공간적 접근이 근대 초기 대서양과 등장하는 세계 경제의 이해에 중심적인 인간의 해양 생활에 대해 많은 것을 드러내리라는 것을 증명한다. 그는 이 모든 것들을 놀랄 정도로 풍부한 자료 조사와 새로운 자료 발굴에 입각해 이루고 있다. 그럼에도 대서양 선 상세계와 자본주의의 등장 간의 관계에 대한 그의 논의는 여전히 아쉬운 부분이 많다. 왜 냐하면 그가 이를 둘러싼 논쟁에 깊이 개입하기를 “정중히 피하고” 있기 때문이다. 또 근대 초기의 정치경제에 대한 그의 설명도 1970년대와 1980년대의 경제사가들의 논의에 머물러 있고, 그때 이래 전개된 글로벌 경제사 내의 다양한 논의들을 반영하지 못하고 있 다. 하지만 자본주의의 등장에서 대서양 선상세계 -선원과 노예, 해적, ‘잡색 무리들’이 살아간- 가 한 중추적 역할을 고려하면, 레디커의 학문적 성취가 가진 중요성은 더욱 두드러진다. 그런 성취들이 근대 세계사의 여러 국면들과 관련해 끊임없이 제기되어야 할 여러 문제들을 강력하게 조명해 주고 있기 때문이다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to examine the historical viewpoint of Marcus Rediker, an American historian typical of the field of Atlantic History, and his historical methods, to expand and diversify the scope and the practices of History viewed from sea . Indeed, he is a preeminent historian practising the history form below of the early modern Atlantic and has published many histories receiving many Academic awards. He stands high in estimation that few historians at work today know the age of sail better than him. I, therefore, look at his methods on the basis of history form below drawing upon Eric Hobsbawm and his spatial notion of ocean and ship drawing upon Michel Foucault. And then, I review his writing of the relationship between the shipboard world of the early modern Atlantic and the rise of capitalism. To do this, I take the focus on four of his many books: Between the Devil and the Deep Blue(1987) Sea, The Slave Ship(2007), The Amistad Rebellion (2012), The Outlaws of the Atlantic(2014). In my eyes, these are most outstanding books illuminating his perspectives and methodology in general. Marcus Rediker is instructive to our historians in way that he has practiced consistently the history from below which has been often disregarded to be out of fashion in Korea since 2000. He illustrates that it is still valid for the historical practices. Also, he demonstrates that a spatial approaches to sea and ship would reveal many things about the maritime life of human being central to our understanding of the early modern Atlantic and the first globalization. All of these are accomplished through the surprisingly abundant documentations. Nevertheless, his discussion of the relationship between the shipboard world and the rise of capitalism leaves something to be desired, because he politely sidesteps to engage deeply with the debates on it. His accounts of the political economy of the early modern remain in the discussions of the economic historians of 1970s and 80s, and fail to include the various discussions of Global economic history evolved since that times. However, given the pivotal role of the Atlantic shipboard life including sailors, slaves, pirates, and motley crews in the rise of capitalism, the significance of his works is underscored because they highlight the perennial questions that should be asked about the phases of modern world history.
