Determinants of Female Labor Force Participation in Burundi

국문 초록

본 연구는 2013년부터 2014년까지 부룬디 통계경제연구소가 수집한 부룬디 생활 수준 및 가족실태에 대한 설문조사 결과를 토대로 한 횡단면 데이터를 이용하여 여성 인력의 부룬디 경제 활동 참여 결정 요인을 분석하였다. 이어서 실증 분석방법으로 로짓회귀 분석법을 채택하였다. 측정 결과 주거지, 빈곤, 아동수, 18-26세 및 세 변수들이 부룬디 여성들의 노동 시장 참여 확률을 증가시키는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 가족인원수 및 65-98 세 변수가 여성들의 노동시장 참여 확률을 감소시키는 것으로 분석되었다.

영문 초록

This paper analyzes the determinants of female labor force participation in a specific country which is Burundi by using cross-sectional data from the survey on living conditions and households conducted between 2013 and 2014, collected by Burundi Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies. To achieve the objectives, the logit regression model is employed as the research methodology and the probit model is used as supporting estimation. The empirical results indicate positive and significant effect of female living in poor household on female labor force participation. Furthermore, the results suggest that factors such as number of children and the youth group (18-26 years old) increase the probability of female to participate in the labor market. It is also observed that female living in rural area participates more in the labor market than female living in urban area. However, the household headed by female, the size of household and the elderly group (65-98 year old) decrease the probability of female to participate in the labor market in Burundi. The participation of female labor force varies across sectors and across regions. The same result is found when is estimation conducted using probit model. Two important policy recommendations can be drawn based on our research findings. Firstly, the government should provide some training centers for females living in urban areas in order to give them some technical skills and in order to increase their educations. Secondly, the government should improve the qualifications of the widows or the divorced women who are the head of household by giving some training courses to enable them to participate in the labor market.
