학습간격과 학습방법이 읽기자료의 지연기억수행에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

본 연구는 국내 대학생에게 읽기자료를 주고, 학습간격(집중학습, 분산학습)과 학습방법(반복읽기, 인출연습)에 따라 자료에 대한 지연기억수행, 학습시간, 그리고 메타인지적 판단이 어떻게 달라지는지 살펴보았다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 분산학습과 인출연습의 긍정적 효과가 모두 나타났으며, 이 둘을 함께 활용할 때 가장 큰 학습 효과가 나타났다. 둘째, 인출연습은 학습간격에 관계없이 학습의 효과를 높이는 것으로 나타났는데, 특히, 학습의 효과성이 낮다고 알려진 집중학습에서도 인출연습이 지연기억수행에 효과적이었다. 인출연습을 하며 집중학습을 한 학습자는 자신의 학습상태에 대해 낮은 메타인지적 자신감을 보였지만, 학습이 진행됨에 따라 학습시간을 줄이지 않았으며, 그 결과 반복읽기를 하며 집중학습을 한 학습자보다 최종시험에서 더 높은 기억수행을 보였다. 셋째, 인출연습 시 더 많은 양을 인출할수록, 더 많은 시간을 들일수록, 인출연습의 효과는 커졌다. 종합할 때, 본 연구는 학습효과를 높이기 위해서 분산학습과 인출연습 같은 효과적인 학습방식의 활용을 높이기 위한 노력이 필요함을 시사한다.

영문 초록

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of study schedule (massed vs. spaced) and study strategy (re-reading, retrieval practice) on delayed memory performance, study time, and metacognitive judgment in reading material. The results showed that, first, both the spaced learning and retrieval practice were effective, and the participants showed the best performance when they used them together. Second, retrieval practice facilitated the learning regardless of study schedule. Especially, the use of retrieval practice facilitated massed learning which was known as ineffective. The participants in the massed_retrieval condition showed lower metacognitive confidence, did not decrease their study time as the experiment progressed, and thus performed better than those in the massed_reread condition. Lastly, the more information the participants retrieved, and the longer time spent on the retrieval practice, the larger was the benefit of retrieval practice. In conclusion, the study suggests that we need to promote the use of effective study strategies such as spaced learning and retrieval practice to enhance students’ learning.
