영화 <늑대소년>의 환상성 재현 양상과 의미

국문 초록

본 연구는 2012년 한국의 로맨스 영화 가운데 최고의 흥행작이자 역대 멜로영화 중 최다 관객을 동원한 <늑대소년>의 환상성 재현 양상과 의미를 탐구하였다. <늑대소년>은 멜로영화의 장르 관습을 비껴나가지 않으면서도 그동안 한국 영화에서는 거의 다룬 적이 없는 늑대인간을 등장시켜 상업적으로 성공했다. <늑대소년>은 환상 경이문학의 동화적 환상성을 수용하고 있으며 판타지 호러 로맨스 영화로 분류할 수 있다. 늑대소년 철수는 서양의 괴물인 늑대인간과 프랑켄슈타인의 한국적 변용으로 볼 수 있다. 경계에 선 중간적 존재인 철수의 괴물성은 추악한 외모의 프랑켄슈타인과는 달리 아름다운 소년의 외모로 상쇄되어 공동체에 무리 없이 수용된다. <늑대소년>에 나타난 환상성의 특징은 첫째, 판타지 호러의 섬뜩한 괴물이 전달하는 ‘낯선 두려움’을 경이로운 동화적 환상으로 수용하고 있다. 둘째, 여성 주체의 욕망 충족을 위해 ‘탈현실’의 환상성을 구축하고 있다. 셋째, 액자구조를 활용해 현재-과거-현재를 유기적으로 교차하고 연결함으로써 환상성을 강화하고 있다. 넷째, 노스탤지어를 통해 과거를 환상적으로 기억하게 함으로써 고단한 현재를 망각하게 하는 이데올로기적 환상성을 구현하고 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze fantasy found in a movie, A Werewolf Boy, which was one of the hugest box office hits among romance movies released in 2012 and mobilized the most audience out of romantic movies screened in the film history of Korea. Although the movie reproduced the conventions of the romantic movie genre in the similar way, it gained magnificent commercial success with the monster boy, a human wolf, appearing in it that had been hardly dealt with in the film history of Korea. This movie adopted fairy tale fantasy in literature of fantasy and wonder and is classified into the fantasy, horror, and romance genre. Unlike Frankenstein that is ugly and hideous, the monsteriness of ‘Cheolsu’ in A Werewolf Boy is accepted to people readily as he looks beautiful. The characteristics of fantasy found in A Werewolf Boy can be summed as follows: first, audience accepts ambiguous as well as ambivalent ‘fear from strangeness (uncanny)’ which the frightening monster delivers as fairly tale fantasy granting the feeling of wonder. Second, the movie establishes fantasy ‘beyond reality’ to satisfy the desire of agent, that is, the naked face of fantasy. Third, employing the frame story, the movie solidifies fantasy even further through organic connection between the present, past, and the present. Fourth, through nostalgia, the movie realizes fantasy that allows the agent to forget the burdensome present remembering the past as some kind of fantasy. This study is significant in that it has analyzed fantasy found in A Werewolf Boy setting force fantasy that had hardly gained any great success in the film history of Korea before the movie and explored how fairy tale-like fantasy movies contain, reveal, and also relieve the desire of the public, particularly female audience.
