언어연극의 한계 극복을 위한 방안 연구

국문 초록

현대 연극은 새로운 시도와 변화들로 점점 그 형식이 다양해지고 있어 연극의 핵심이 문학적인 것에서 말 이외의 모든 연극적 표현방식을 활용한 공연적인 것으로 확대되고 있다. 한국 전통극은 현대극이 추구하는 모든 조건을 갖추고 있었다. 배우의 역할이 가장 우선시되었으며 이미 오브제의 활용을 통해 배우의 역할을 능동적으로 전환시켰고 열린 무대를 활용하여 관객의 참여를 적극적으로 독려하여 관객과 배우가 소통하여 함께 만들어가는 극을 지향하고 있었다. 그러나 한국의 연극은 서구의 이성 중심주의에 입각한 이원론의 영향을 받아 몸을 정신에 비해 열등한 존재로 인식하게 만들었다. 따라서 언어 또는 희곡텍스트를 기반으로 하는 사실주의 연극이 제도권 내 주류로 인정받아 큰 발전을 이루어 온 반면, 몸을 기반으로 하는 연극은 저급한 예술로 치부되어 전문적이고 지속적인 성장의 기회를 상실하게 된다. 90년대 이후 포스트모더니즘의 영향으로 한국의 연극계에도 해체연극에 대한 논의들과 작업들이 행해지기 시작하면서 신체의 중요성과 비언어연극들이 활성화되기 시작하였다. 그러나 근본적인 해결방안은 찾지 못한 채 다시 사실주의 연극이 주를 이루고 있다. 이 연구의 목적은 사실주의 연극에 기반을 두고 있는 한국연극의 문제점인 언어연극의 한계성에 대해 생각해 보고 그 해결방안을 모색하는 데 있다. 그 방법으로 언어 중심의 텍스트인 아서 밀러의 작품 <시련>을 신체연극으로 제작하는 과정을 분석하고자 한다. 문학텍스트를 공연텍스트화하는 과정을 통해 새로운 형태의 공연을 시도할 수 있는 방향성을 제시하고 더 나아가 다양한 형태의 공연을 제작하고 실행할 수 있는 창조적 연기자, 창조적 예술가로서의 기반을 마련하여 보편연극으로 세계시장을 향해 도전할 수 있는 계기를 마련하고자 한다.

영문 초록

Because the forms of modern theater have been diversified with new challenge and changes, theater’s core is being based on performing approaches using theatrical expressions, rather than literary approaches. Traditional Korean theaters have all of the conditions that modern theater seeks. First of all, actor’s role is one of the most important parts, by using objet that takes an active part of the actor, and open stage is usually used to emphasize sort of dramatic communications between audiences and actors during the performances. However, Korean theaters make it consider that a body is inferior to its spirit, because of the influence of dualism based on the western rationalism. Therefore, realistic plays based on languages or plays have been developed as the mainstream of Korean theater, but the theaters mainly based on physical approaches have been considered as the inferior art without the chances of development. After the 1990’s, there had been some works and discussions of Korean deconstructive theater influenced by postmodernism, and so the importance of physical theaters and non-verbal theaters had just warmed up. However, now, in the Korean theater field, realistic plays have been existed as an immovable mainstream without any fundamental solution. The purpose of this study is to seek a solution for overcoming the limits of language play, Korean play’s chronic problem only based on the play of realism. In this way, I will analyze the process of making the play, Arthur Miller’s Crucible, mainly based on language, being created as a physical play. The process that any literature text is becoming a performing text, can suggest the new way to attempt a theatrical form, by extension, can raise creative actors and artists carrying out various performances, and the can finally pave the way of a challenge in the world markets, putting emphasis on theatrical universality.
