국문 초록

이 논문은 존 카사베츠의 영화의 중요한 미학적 특징을‘즉흥성’이라는 예술적 실천과 밀접히 연관되어 있다는 사실로부터 출발하고 있다. 즉흥성은 전후 미국 예술의 다양한 분야에서 추구된 예술적 실천양식이다. 따라서 논문은 <그림자들Shadows>을 중심으로 즉흥성에 대한 다양한 의미를 살펴보고 있다. 그리고 카사베츠의 영화에서의 영화 제작 과정의 특성을 분석하면서 어떻게 영화적 즉흥성의 문제가 제시될 수 있는가를 해명하고 있다. 논문은 즉흥성의 문제가 영화적 체험의 문제와 연관되어 있음을 주목하면서 그의 영화가‘카메라의 기록능력’과‘이미지의 배치’라는 영화적 유산과 허구적 인물에 생명력을 부여하는 연극적 유산을 어떻게 창조적으로 결합시키고 있는지를 검토하고 있다. 마지막으로 논문은 카사베츠의 편집 방식을 검토하고 있다. 이러한 편집 작업에서의 카사베츠의 시선은 다성악적(polyphonie) 시선이라는 개념으로 제시될 수 있다. 카사베츠의 영화에서 작가는 이 다양한 캐릭터들의 시점을 단순히 조정하는 조정자로서 존재하지 않는다. 카사베츠의 영화 세계는 단 하나의 시점으로 정의될 수 없는 다양한 시점이 공존하는 세계로서 나타나고 있다. 그 세계는 하나의 시점이 지배하는 세계가 아니며 여러 제스처들의 아펙션 이미지들로서 나타나고 있는 세계임을 이 논문은 결론적으로 제시하고 있다.

영문 초록

This paper is based on the claim that the important aesthetic character of John Cassavetes’ film is closely related to the artistic practice of ‘improvisation’. Impovisation is an artistic practice style pursued in various fields of postwar American art. So, after examining the various meanings of improvisation, we examine Shadows, which is evaluated as a representative filmic work of improvisation. And we are analyzing the characteristics of the film-making process in the works of Cassavetes, explaining how the problem of cinematic improvisation can be presented. We also note that the problem of improvisation is related to the problem of cinematic experience. And we are explaining how his film world creatively combines the cinematic heritage of ‘camera’s recording power’ and ‘editing of images’ and the theatrical heritage that gives life to a fictional character. Finally, the paper examines the editing method of Cassavetes. In this editing work, Cassavetes’s gaze can be presented as a polyphonic gaze. In his cinematic world, the author does not exist as a coordinator who simply adjusts the viewpoints of these various characters. His film world is emerging as a world in which various viewpoints can not be defined as a single point of view. This paper concludes that his cinematic world is not a world dominated by a single point of view, but a world that appears as image-affection of various gestures.
