Living and Dying in a New Orleans’s Charity Hospital Sick Chamber during the Antebellum Period

국문 초록

본 연구는 남북전쟁 이전 미국 루이지애나 주 뉴올리언스 시의 자선병원(Charity Hospital)을 사례로 들어 19세기 전반기 미국 남부 병원에서의 환자들의 생활을 고찰하고자 한다. 기존의 자선병원에 대한 연구에서는 주로 연대기적 제도사를 다루었지만, 본 연구에서는 병원보고서, 의과대학 편람, 신문, 의학저널 등을 참조하여 자선병원에서의 환자들의 삶을 조명하였다. 자선병원에서는 200여개의 다양한 질병을 다루었고, 황열병같은 아열대 전염병이 유행할 때 병원은 환자들로 가득 찼다. 병원의 환자들은 백인 중산층 토착 거주자들보다는 ‘죽음 직전’에 병원을 찾는 유럽계 이민 노동자들이 대다수였다. 치료법은 ‘영웅적 치료법’(heroic medicine), 혹은 술 같은 흥분제를 투여하는 치료법이 주로 쓰였다. 이러한 치료법은 나이, 성별, 환자 상태를 제대로 고려하지 않고 무차별적으로 사용되기도 하였다. 환자들은 병원에서 2차 감염병인 ‘병원감염병’(hospitalism)으로 사망하는 일도 많았다. 의과대학의 교육 병원이었기에 병원 환자들은 치료 중이나 사망한 후에 교실이나 박물관에서 관찰의 대상이 되었다. 이상과 같이 본 연구는 뉴올리언스 시의 자선병원의 환자들의 삶과 죽음을 역사적 사례로 조명함으로써 19세기 미국 의학사와 병원사를 비롯하여 남부사 연구에도 기여하고 있다.

영문 초록

This study explores the lives of patients at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana during the antebellum period. While most of the previous studies on Charity Hospital simply chronicled the history of the hospital, this study aims to reconstruct the lives of Charity Hospital patients inside the hospital walls by relying upon the official hospital reports, annual circulars of the medical schools, newspapers, and medical journals. Over 200 diseases were diagnosed or treated at Charity Hospital. Hospital patients, who were mostly non-local, lower class laborers from Europe were more likely to visit the hospital “on the brink of death.” Heroic medicine (i.e. bleeding, purging) or stimulants (i.e. alcoholic beverages) were primarily administered to the patients, regardless of their age, gender or physical conditions. Patients often died of secondary infections, so-called “hospitalism” at the hospital. Charity Hospital patients were subject to observation in classrooms, amphitheater, or medical museums during medical treatment or after death. This study concludes that the microcosmic lens upon the stories of patients at a southern hospital, that is, Charity Hospital enriches various research fields including the history of hospitals, the history of medicine in general, and history of the American South.
