국문 초록

한국 고등교육의 교양교육과정은 1945년부터 1954년까지 10년간에 걸쳐 형성되었다. 본 연구는 이 과정을 교육과정의 목표, 구조적·내용적 특징그리고 운영상의 문제를 중심으로 분석한 것이다. 한국의 교양교육은 단선형 고등교육 체제 재편과 대규모 학생을 대상으로 하는 학사 효율화 시스템 도입을 통하여 형성되었다. ‘교양교육 법정주의’를 채택함으로써 구조적으로는 대학 단계에서 교양교육을 이수하는 체제를 구축하였으며, 내용적으로는 경직성, 획일성, 도구주의, 고등학교 교육과정과의 차별성 부족, 전공 예비 교육적 성격, 복합형 모델 적용 그리고 학제적 과목의 부재라는 특징을 보이고 있다. 그리고 운영상으로는 교양과목의 제한, 저학년 대상, 학과 주도형 교양과목 설강, 교양교육 전담교원 부재 그리고 교양교육의 경시화 등을 특징으로 찾을 수 있다. 교양교육과정 형성기에 나타난 왜곡된 교양교육과정을 비판적으로 극복하고 21세기의 전망을 담아 대학 교양교육과정의 새로운 지평을 모색하여야 할 때다.

영문 초록

The formation of general education curriculum in Korean higher education was established during a 10 year period from 1945 to 1954. This article analyzes this 10 year period, focusing on the purpose of the curriculum, characteristics of its structure and contents and the issues in operating the curriculum. Korean general education developed in the context of reforming a single ladder higher education system and the need for an efficient academic system for a large number of students. The legal status of general education was recognized, allowing the education structure of general education in the university system to be settled. Korean general education curricula have the following characteristics: rigidity, uniformity, instrumentalism, lack of difference with high school curriculum, preparatory courses for major courses, adoption of comprehensive education model and the absence of interdisciplinary subjects. Its operational issues are: a limited number of general education courses, courses for junior students, courses opened by individual departments, absence of faculty teaching exclusively general education and negligence of liberal arts education. It is necessary to consider a new way to reconstruct the general education curriculum for the 21st century and it is critically important to overcome the distorted general education curriculum which was inherited from the 1950s.
