국문 초록

본 연구는 정보 통신 테크놀로지를 영어 교육에 이용할 방법을 논의하고, 정보 통신 테크놀로지로 더욱 글로벌화되고 있는 세계에서 영어 교육의 내용이 어떠해야 할 것인지 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 인터넷은 일상생활에서 영어를 사용하지 않는, 영어를 외국어로 배우는 학습자들에게 실생활에 쓰이는 영어를 접할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다. 또한 인터넷은 자기가 속도를 조절하는 학습, 평생학습을 가능하게 한다. 인터넷 상에서 학생들은 자신이 원하는 시간과 장소에서, 원하는 속도로 학습을 할 수 있다. 이러한 이점들은 특히 영어를 일상어로 사용하지 않는 한국 학생들에게 유리한 점이다. 인터넷이 스스로 영어를 공부할 수 있도록 해 주기 때문에, 사교육 의존도를 줄일 가능성이 커진다. 인터넷은 교실 학습에서 영어를 배울 때도 마찬가지로 유용하다. 수업의 조력자로서 교사는 인터넷으로부터 가져온 유용한 자료들을 이용해 질적으로 우수한 수업을 구성할 수 있다. 또한 교사는 전 세계의 영어 교사들이 다른 교사들과 공유하기 위해 게시하는 수업안들을 참고할 수도 있다. 수업 커뮤니티를 통해 교사와 학생 간, 학생 상호 간에 더욱 원활한 의사소통이 가능하다는 점도 정보 통신 테크놀로지가 교실 영어 학습에 주는 이점이라고 할 수 있다. 인터넷이 제공하는 속도와 상호작용 덕분에 이제 문화 학습과 문화 교류가 더 용이해졌다. 교사는 전통적인 의미에서 ‘문화’를 가르치는 것은 아니고, 어떻게 문화에 대해 적절한 의문을 가지고 해결할 것인지의 방법을 함께 모색해 간다고 할 수 있다. 또한 이제 학생들은 환경, 기아, 전쟁, 글로벌 경제 위기 등의 전 지구적 문제들에 의견을 개진하는 것이 가능하다. 그들은 연구, 논쟁, 팀 프로젝트 등으로 이들 주제들에 대해 공부할 수 있으며 인터넷 홈페이지나 SNS를 통해 자신들의 의견을 적극적으로 표현할 수 있다. 글로벌 차원의 문제들을 인식하고 그 해결책에 대해 자신의 생각을 적극적으로 표현하는 것이 그들을 진정한 세계시민으로 만들어줄 것이다.

영문 초록

English is the dominant global language of the Internet. In this paper, I discuss how to make the most of the ICT(Information and Communication Technology) for English education, and what the contents of English education should be like in the globalized context. The Internet helps EFL students to learn the authentic English which is not available in their everyday lives. The Internet also makes possible the self-paced learning and life-long learning with minimal restrictions of time and place. Students can study English at any time at any place at their own pace. These benefits of the Internet are especially advantageous for Koreans, who don’t use English as their everyday language. It also makes the self-study of English easier, which helps to reduce the cost of private education that many Koreans heavily depend on for their English education. The Internet is useful for classroom English as well. As the facilitator of the class, the teacher can build a class with a lot of useful resources from the Internet. The teacher can also refer to many lesson plans that English teachers around the world post to share with other teachers. ICT also encourages the communication between the teacher and the students as well as among classmates. With speed and interactive-ness that the Internet provides, it is now easier to learn about other cultures and to exchange cultures. Teachers cannot teach culture itself in the traditional sense, but help students to ask right questions about cultures and find answers for the questions. Also, it is possible for students to participate in the global issues such as the environment, starvation, wars, the global economic crisis, etc. They can research, debate, do team projects, and express their opinions about the issues through Internet pages and SNS. Having interests in global issues and expressing their ideas is what truly makes them global citizens.
