This paper examines the pattern of division violence and trauma in Lee Jung-hwan s 『Saekgang』. 『Saekgang』 is a division novel that embodies the lives of the people who live in the pain of division at the time when the division was fixed. It is also a writer s autobiographical novel that considers the vocation of the writer living in the era of division.
Of particular interest in 『Saekgang』 are those suffering from divided trauma. The people who were supposed to be Bbalgangi’ victims of ideology because their homeland is North Korea, the poet who had to be silenced in the ideological violence created by the division, and novelist lived in the memory of the war and still held in their memory were painfully depicted in 『Saekgang』. What these suffering people have in common is that they are able to speak but not speak. Those who had to live deprived of their liberty in a divided country live without saying what to say who fail to defend themselves against the irrationalities that have come upon them. Yet paradoxically, those who are dumb in 『Saekgang』 tell their stories by not speaking. Their lives themselves are testimonies of the tragic era, such as novelists who live with the wounds of the prisoners, refugees who sing only the same song, and poets who spend time in pain without writing. In times without freedom of creation and freedom of expression, they tell their stories by not speaking.
In addition, 『Saekgang』 talks about vocation as a novelist who must testify to the era of violence through a novelist who can be his alter ego. Those who suffer in 『Saekgang』 are those who dream of free reality. The novel says that it is vocation of the writer to represent the reality without such freedom. In that sense, 『Saekgang』 is itself a testimony to the violent division of reality that still continues today.
