사회적 갈등 해소를 위한 학교 교육의 실천 방향: 젠더불평등을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 젠더불평등을 둘러싼 사회적 갈등 문제 해소를 위해 학교 교육에서 민주적 태도를 함양하는 젠더윤리교육이 필요하다고 보고, 이를 실천하기 위한 교육의 방향을 제안해 보려는 것이다. 젠더교육은 개인적 성공이나 부의 축적과 같은 수단이나 기능으로서 목표가 아닌, 공동체 안에서 개인이 존중받고 서로 조화롭게 소통하며 행복한 삶을 살아가기 위한, 즉, 참된 삶을 영위하기 위한 도덕적·윤리적 목적성을 가진 교육이기 때문이다. 이에 실제 한국의 교육현장에 존재하는 젠더불평등 문제를 살펴보고, 그 문제를 해결하기 위한 실천적 교육방법을 모색하였다. 한국의 교육현장은 여전히 가부장적이고 전통적인 남성성이나 여성성으로서의 성 역할과 고정관념이 잠재적 교육과정을 통해 전달되는, 젠더불평등 문제가 상존한다. 이러한 불평등은 성적 ‘차이’에 의한 배려가 아니라 ‘차별’이기에, 단지 여성의 권리획득을 위한 작업이 아니라 공동체의 평화로운 질서를 추구하기 위한 일련의 과정이 되어야 한다. 이에 다음과 같은 교육의 실천 방향을 제시하였다. 첫째, 교사와 학생, 학생과 학생 사이에 상호주관적이고 개방적 대화와 토론이 가능한 교실 공간의 확보, 둘째, 자신의 경험을 나누고, 인식의 변화를 두려워하지 않는 용기와 타인의 불편과 고통을 공감하는 연민의 자세 확립, 셋째, 생각의 주체로서 깨어있는 감각을 가지고 현상을 바라보는 비판적 사고 함양이다. 이를 위해 시급한 사안은 교육현장에서 젠더윤리교육의 필요성을 인식하고, 젠더불평등에 대한 의식 변화를 지향하는 교육 실천이다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to propose an education method for schools to foster democratic attitudes in youths for resolving social conflicts such as gender inequality. Gender education is not a goal as a means or function, such as personal success or being wealthy, but is an education method with a moral and ethical purpose to foster well-being, in which individuals are respected and communicate well whit each other. Thus, looking into gender inequality present in the current education environments of South Korea, the paper explores ways to practice education methods to resolve such issues. The writers’ analysis of gender inequality in education environments confirmed stereotypes regarding gender such as patriarchy, traditional masculinity and femininity still playing out as a ‘hidden curriculum’. This paper proposes three educational schemes to help people realize that these problems do not stem from thoughtful consideration for the unique characteristics of gender but from a place of discrimination, as well as to pursue communal peace for all genders. First, classrooms should be made available for open and intersubjective dialogue among teachers and students. Second, students should be provided with a safe environment to share personal experiences, feeling each other’s pain, and to build a sense of empathy. Third, students should be taught a method of critical thinking that enables them to analyze an issue from an objective perspective. In order for these to work in practice, it is necessary for schools and teachers to recognize the importance of gender education and the need for its immediate implementation.
