에도(江戸)시대 ‘돌팔이의사(薮医者)’의 이미지 형상화 과정에 대한 고찰

국문 초록

본고에서는 일본 근세기의 ‘돌팔이의사’의 이미지 형성화 과정에 대해서 당시의 ‘의학’과 ‘의사’를 둘러싼 시대적 배경과 다양한 사회·문화 현상을 중심으로 살펴보고, 특히 ‘돌팔이 의사’라는 캐릭터가 문학작품 속에서 정형화되고 정착하게 되는 과정과 그 특징에 대해서 분석해 보았다. 에도시대에는 ‘돌팔이의사’를 의미하는 다양한 용어들이 발생하고, ‘돌팔이의사’라는 캐릭터와 이를 둘러싼 에피소드들이 문학작품 속의 이야기 소재로 주목받고 각광받고 있었다. 이러한 사회적 배경에는 기본적인 의학지식의 부족과 의료에 대한 의사들의 인식과 태도, 학문적 성취도, 한의학 자체의 비과학성 등 의사들을 둘러싼 부정적인 요소들이 작용하고 있었다고 볼 수 있다. ‘돌팔이의사’는 에도시대 초기부터 문학작품의 소재로도 여러 장르의 작품 속에 등장하여 독특한 캐릭터를 형상화해 오고 있다. 의료의 수준이 지금과 비교해서 현격히 낮았던 근세에는 환자의 생사(生死)는 의사의 실력보다도 운에 좌우되는 경우가 많았다. 그런 의미에서 근세의 의사 대부분은 ‘돌팔이의사’라고 할 수 있으며, 소설에 등장하는 경우는 동시대를 표상하는 풍자의 대상으로 그려지는 경우가 많았다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This thesis examines the process of forming the image of the quack doctor of the modern Japanese period, focusing on the historical background and various social and cultural phenomena surrounding the ‘medicine’ and ‘doctor’ at that time. Especially, this thesis analyzed the process of formalization and settlement in literary works and their characteristics. In the Edo period, various words meaning “quack doctors” occurred, and the character the “quack doctors” and the episodes surrounding them were attracting attention and spotlights as narrative material in literary works. These social backgrounds can be attributed to the negative factors surrounding doctors such as lack of basic medical knowledge, physicians’ perceptions and attitudes about medical care, academic achievement, and the unscientific nature of oriental medicine itself. Since the early Edo period, the ‘quack doctor’ has appeared in many genres of works as a subject of literary works and has been making unique characters. In modern times, when the level of medical care was significantly lower than in the present, the death of patients were often more dependent on luck than the ability of doctors. In that sense, most of the modern doctors can be called quack doctors, and in the novels, they are often depicted as objects of satire representing the contemporary period.
