국문 초록

이 논문은 대한제국시기에 도입된 전차가 식민지시기를 지나 해방 후 대한민국시기로 이어지는 70여 년 동안 도시교통으로 기능할 수 있었던 요인을 살펴본 것이다. 일반적으로 세계 도시교통사의 흐름에서 전차가 도시의 주된 교통기관이었던 시기는 1890~1920년대였다. 그것은 1920년대 이후 자동차가 보급되면서 전차가 쇠퇴의 길을 걸었기 때문이다. 그러나 서울에서는 도시교통으로 전차의 역할이 오래 지속되었다. 그것은 첫째, 식민지 경성에서 자동차의 발달이 철도와 전차에 위협 요소가 된다는 시각에서 궤도를 보호하는 방침이 결정되었고, 둘째, 전시체제기 들어 기존의 도시교통이 유지되기가 어려웠으며, 셋째, 해방 후 교통 환경의 변화가 도시교통의 불완전한 상태를 지속시켰기 때문이다. 즉 도시교통이 발달할 수 있는 환경이 조성되지 못했던 것이다. 이에 따라 전차는 1968년까지 서울의 도시교통으로 기능하였다.

영문 초록

This study investigated the determinants of trams’ functional capabilities as a mode of urban transportation over a span of seventy years, since its introduction to Korea during the Korean Empire through the colonial period and to the Republic of Korea after its independence from Japan. In general, in the history of global urban traffic, the period when the tram was a major mode of transportation was between the 1890s and the 1920s. This was due to cars increasing from the 1920s, causing the tram to decline. However, in Seoul, the role of the tram as a mode of urban transportation has continued over a long period of time. This was because, first, in colonized Gyeongseong Province, the advances in automobile technology were viewed as threats to railroads and trams; therefore, a policy to protect tram rails was established. Second, during the war, existing urban traffic was bound to be maintained or reduced; and third, after Korea’s independence, changes in the traffic environment sustained the incomplete state of urban traffic. In other words, an environment suitable for the advancement of urban traffic was not provided. As a result, the tram served as the mode of urban transportation in Seoul until 1968.
