조선시대 제주도 9진성에 대한 역사지리적 고찰

국문 초록

조선시대 제주도에서는 해안 방어를 위해 화북진성, 조천진성, 별방진성, 수산진성, 서귀진성, 모슬진성, 차귀진성, 명월진성,애월진성 등 9개의 진성을 축조하여 운영하였다. 15세기에서 17세기에 걸쳐 진성이 축조되었는데, 현존하는 회화식 고지도에서 구체적인 모습을 파악해 볼 수 있다. 1694년 이익태 목사가 제작한 『탐라십경도』 계열의 지도와 1702년 이형상 목사가 제작한 『탐라순력도』에는 9진성의 모습이 잘 표현되어 있다. 성곽의 형태는 대부분 원형 또는 타원형이지만 수산진성, 차귀진성처럼 사각형의 형태를 띤 것도 있다. 모든 진성에 성문이 설치되어 있는데, 한 개에서 세 개까지 다양하게 설치되었다. 모든 진성에는 객사와 무기고가 들어서 있다. 객사인 경우 일부 기와지붕으로 된 것도 있지만 대부분 초가로 되어 있다. 명월진이나 별방진처럼 큰 규모의 성에는 성안에 우물이 있으나 대부분의 진성에는 우물이 없어서 근처의 용천수를 이용했다.

영문 초록

In the Joseon Dynasty, Jeju Island built nine fortresses(Jinseong) including Hwabuk fortress, Jocheon fortress, Beolbang fortress, Susan fortress, Seogui fortress, Moseul fortress, Chagui fortress, Myeongwol fortress and Aewol fortress. The nine fortresses were built from the 15th to 17th centuries, and the concrete figures can be understood from the existing pictorial maps. The landscapes of nine fortresses are well expressed in the maps of the Tamnasipgyeongdo series produced by Lee Ik-tae in 1694 and the Tamnasulreokdo by Lee Hyeong-sang in 1702. Most of the forms of the fortresses are circular or elliptical, but some have a rectangular shape like Chagui fortress and Susan fortress. There are gates installed in all the castles, and one to three are installed in various ways. All the fortresses have Gaeksa(royal guesthouse) and armory. In case of Gaeksa, some are made of tile roofs, but most are made of candles. There is a well in the fortress on a large scale like Myeongwol fortress or Beolbang fortress, but most of the fortresses did not have wells, so they used nearby spring water.
