부산포해전의 경과와 의의

국문 초록

임진왜란 시기 수군은 1592년 전쟁 첫 해에 4회의 출전과 10여 차례의 해전에서 모두 승리하며 조선이 국란을 극복하는데 결정적인 역할을 하였다. 부산포해전은 그 마지막 해전으로서 일본의 수군 근거지를 직접 공략하며 큰 승리 를 거두었다. 앞서 펼쳐진 1∼3차 해전은 부산포해전으로 이어지는 과정으로서의 의미가 있다. 1592년 5월 4일부터 9일까지 진행된 제1차 출전에서 조선수군은 옥포해전, 합포해전, 적진포해전을 통해 일본 군선 44척을 격파하며 시작을 승리로 장식하였다. 이어서 5월 29일부터 6월 10일까지 이어진 제2차 출전에서도 사천, 당포, 당항포, 율포해전 등에서 모두 승리하며 72척의 일본 군션을 격파하였다. 제3차 출전은 일본의 중앙(주력) 수군과 조선 통합함대간의 대결이었다. 7월 6일 펼쳐진 한산대첩은 이순선 등이 이끈 조선 통합함대가 유인작전과 학익진 전술을 통해 대소 73척 중에 59척을 격파하며 대승을 거두었다. 이 승리로 남해의 제해권을 조선 수군이 장악했고, 일본은 해전을 회피하는 소극적인 전술로 바뀌었다. 제4차 출전의 부산포해전은 일본 수군의 근거지를 직접 공격하는 것을 목표로 하였다. 때문에 기존 세 차례 출전 때보다 크게 증강된 전선 85척 내외의 전력을 준비해서 해전에 임했다. 그리고 전라우도 수군은 출전 20여 일전에 좌수영에 모여 합동 훈련을 하는 등 철저한 준비를 갖추었다. 8월 29일과 9월 1일 해전 당일 장림포와 화준구미부터 절영도를 통과해 부산포에 도착할 때까지 5곳에서 30여 척을 격파했고, 오후 늦게 시작된 부산포의 해전에서도 1백여 척을 격파하는 큰 승리를 거두었다. 이 글에서는 지도를 통해 대략적인 일본 수군의 정박처를 추정해 보았고, 해전 당일 조류가 조선 수군이 정박한 일본 수군을 공격하기에 알맞은 상태였음을 확인하였다. 부산포에 정박한 일본 세력을 모두 섬멸하지는 못했지만, 첫 해 해전에서 가장 큰 규모의 승리를 거두었다는 것과 일본의 병참 근거지를 직접 공격해서 타격을 입힌 것은 부산포해전의 중요한 역사적 의의라 하겠다.

영문 초록

The Chosun s naval forces engaged in combat four times and won ten naval battles from the first year of the Imjin Invasion of Japan in 1592, playing a decisive role in allowing Chosun to overcome its tumultuous times. Busanpo-sea battle was the last naval battle during the war where Chosun gained victory by strategically striking Japan s naval base directly. The first three naval engagements leading up to the Busanpo-sea battle are also significant. During the first naval engagement from May 4th to May 9th in 1592, Chosun s naval forces started with victory, defeating a total of 44 Japanese warships in the Okpo-sea battle, Happo-sea battle, jeokjinpo-sea battle. In the second naval engagement, from May 29th to June 10th, Chosun continued to be victorious, crushing 72 Japanese warships. The third naval engagement was between Chosun s combined fleets and Japan s main naval forces. During the great victory of Hansan(閑山) in July 8th, Admiral Yi and his combined fleets gained monumental victory against the Japanese, destroying 59 out of 73 war fleets through luring-tactic(誘引作戰) and Hak-ik-jin tactical formation(鶴翼陣 戰術). Through this victory, the Chosun naval forces secured command of the South Sea and Japan switched to a less aggressive war strategy, opting to avoid naval battles. The fourth naval engagement, Busanpo-sea battle, focused on directly attacking the Japanese naval base. As a result, Chosun prepared a total of 85 war ships, the most out of the four naval engagement. In addition, Chosun thoroughly prepared, launching joint training programs in J oasuyoung (左水營) with Jeonrawoodo(全羅右道) naval forces 20 days before the battle. On August 29th and September 1st, Chosun s forces arrived in Busanpo(釜山浦) starting from J angrimpo(長林浦) and Hwajungumi(花樽龜尾) and passing Jeolyoungdo(絶影島), destroying 30 Japanese fleets in five different locations. At the battle of Busanpo that started in late afternoon, the Chosun navy won by a landslide, defeating 100 Japanese warships. Chosun correctly deduced the location of Japanese anchored fleets through as the tides were in perfect condition to attack. Although Chosun Navy was not able to eliminate all Japanese forces, The attack itself has a historical significant meaning of defeating Japanese forces in a large scale leading to Chosun s victory.
