국문 초록

옥포해전은 임진왜란 발발 이후 조선이 거둔 육·해상 최초의 승전이다. 조선 수군은 옥포해전에서 일본의 함선 30여 척 가운데 26척을 격파하였으며, 수많은 인원을 살상하였다. 반면에 조선의 함선은 단 한 척도 격파되지 않았으며, 사상자도 경미한 부상자 1명뿐이었다. 완전한 승리였다. 옥포해전의 승리의 요인은 무엇일까? 그 첫째는 조선 수군의 질적인 전투력이 일본 수군을 압도하였다는 것이요. 둘째는 함선의 척수 측면에서도 우세한 상황을 만들어 놓고 싸운 탁월한 리더 이순신의 역량이다. 이 두 가지 요소는 이순신 장군이 치른 거의 모든 해전의 공통된 승리 요인이다. 아울러 옥포해전의 의의는 다음과 같이 정리할 수 있을 것이다. 첫째, 옥포해전은 임진왜란 발발 이후 육전(陸戰)과 해전(海戰)을 통틀은 최초의 승리였다는 점에서 조선에게는 한 줄기 빛과 같은 해전이었다. 둘째, 질적 전투력 측면에서 <조선수군이 일본 수군을 압도하였다>는 것을 처음으로 보여준 해전이다. 셋째, 임진왜란 발발 이래 최초로 함대(艦隊) 급(級) 규모 이상의 통합 함대가 치른 해전으로 이후 조선 수군의 함대 운용의 표준을 제공한 해전이다. 넷째, 먼저 적을 발견하고 추격 -> 격파하는 이순신의 ‘공세의 원칙’ 이 처음으로 선을 보인 해전이다. 다섯째, 첨단 화약무기와 재래식 무기를 결합시킨 조선 수군의 당파(撞破)·분멸(焚滅) 전술을 처음으로 정형화된 형태로 선 보인 해전이다. 여섯째, 도요토미 히데요시가 조선 수군의 존재를 전혀 염두에 두지 않고 조선 침략 전략을 수립했다는 것을 추정하게 해 준 최초의 해전이다. 일곱째, <바다로 쳐들어오는 적은 해전[水戰]으로 막아야 한다>는 이순신의 ‘어적수전(禦敵水戰)’의 전략적 사고가 확고하게 정립되는 계기가 된 해전이다. 결론적으로 옥포해전은 임진왜란 발발 이후 육전과 해전을 통틀은 최초의 승리라는 단순한 의미를 넘어 임진왜란을 극복하는 데 결정적 역할을 했던 조선 수군의 경쟁력의 실체와 탁월한 리더 이순신이 처음으로 등장하게 된 역사적 해전이었다.

영문 초록

The Battle of Okpo was the first victory during the Imjin invasion of Japan. The soldiers of the Choseon navy destroyed 26 out of a total of 30 ships and caused huge casualties. In contrast, no ships part of the Choseon s fleet were destroyed, while only one soldier suffered from a minor injury. It was a complete victory. So what was the mam factor for the victory of Okpo Battle? First of all, the qualitative abilities of the Choseon soldiers overwhelmed the Japanese navy. Second, the excellent leadership of Admiral Yi Sun Sin created superior situations despite the odds. These two characteristics are the common factors of his victory in most of battles. The significance of the Battle of Okpo can be summarized as followed. First, the Battle of Okpo was a ray of light as the first victory of all battles during the Imjin war. Second, this was the first sea battle that showed the Choseon s navy overwhelmed the Japanese navy because of superior battle skills. Third, this was Choseon s first sea warfare using a united fleet. Thus, this became the standard of Choseon s fleet operations. Fourth, the pursue-destroy strategy of Admiral Yi, also known as the principle of offence, was first shown in this war, Fifth, it was the first battle where Choseon combined hot weapon and traditional weapon and showed a damage and exterminate tactic. Sixth, it was also the first battle where Toyotomi Hideyoshi is presumed to have planned an invasion without considering the presence of Choseon s maritime forces. Seventh, Yi Sun Sin s strategic intelligence from the thought that Enimies incoming from the sea must be countered through sea warfare (禦敵水戰) was firmly established. In conclusion, the Battle of OkPo was not only the first victory during the Imjin war, but was also the cause of Admiral Yi s powerful leadership coming into light which helped Choseon to overcome the Imjin war.
