연희전문학교의 음악활동과 선교사 교원의 역할

국문 초록

연희전문학교의 음악 역사는 1914년 대학예비학교 시절에 베커 선교사의 집에서 시작되었다. 그 후 1920년과 1929년, 교수회에 의해 음악과 설치가 두 번 시도되었다. 후자는 종합대학의 수립을 위한 7개년계획 안에서 추진되었다. 그런 점에서 1930년대 초중반의 활발한 음악활동은 음악과의 설치를 준비하는 운동의 의미를 지니고 있었다. 더불어 문과 교수들의 조선학 연구 및 『동아일보』 중심의 민족문화운동과 결합한 계몽운동의 성격도 지니고 있었다. 이 음악활동의 이면에는 선교사 교수들이 있었다. 그들은 기독교가 사회향상에 기여해야 한다고 믿고 현지인의 지도력과 지역의 전통문화를 존중하는 모습을 보였다. 한국인 교수들과 더불어 동서사상의 융합을 꾀하였고, 한국인 교수들이 경성제대의 관학에 대항하는 사학의 전통을 세우고 한국인 음악교수들과 음악부장들이 지도력을 발휘할 여건을 조성하였다. 음악을 가르친 부인 선교사들은 교수의 직책을 맡지는 않았지만, 학생들을 가르치고, 연습시키고, 인솔하고, 함께 공연하면서, 한국인 교수의 공백을 메꾸고 일손을 덜어주었다, 연전 초창기에 밴드를, 1927~28년에 관현악단을 조직하여 한국인 교수가 결실을 거두게 하였다.

영문 초록

The history of western music education at Chosen Christian College(Yon Hui Jeonmoon Hakgyo), the predecessor in the colonial period of the present Yonsei University in Seoul, originated in the home of professor Arthur L. Becker(1879~1978) in 1914. The faculty of the college moved for establishment a Music Department two times: in 1920 and 1929. In spite of these failures, the movements provided chances to go further. Especially after the latter movement, in 1930s, the faculty and students held various nationwide music concerts and events for the college publicity and modern musical enlightenment. Behind all the musical activities of the college, there were Presbyterian and Methodist missionary professors from the U.S.A. and Canada. The missionaries of C.C.C. believed in the Christianity, which lets the natives share the responsibilities for their growth, and acknowledges the national identity of any people. The missionaries with such an idea in mind, made the peculiar academic character of East-West fusion with Korean Professors and allowed the Korean professors could lead the music activities. Some missionary professors’ wives who taught music at C.C.C. helped the Korean music professors as well. The wives filled up the blank space of native teaching force, lightened the burden of the professors, and organized a band and a orchestra of the college and handed over them to the professors who would developed them. The wives also helped the students by teaching, training, guiding, and performing with them.
