편견 감소 수업의 구성과 실천

국문 초록

본 연구는 편견 감소 수업 구성과 실천에 관한 논의에 초점이 있다. 편견은 대상에 대한 부정적 태도로, 고정관념, 차별 등의 개념과 밀접한 관계가 있다. 편견 감소를 위한 교육적 노력은 우리나라를 비롯한 세계 곳곳에서 이루어졌으며, 그 중요성은 점점 증가하고 있다. 본 연구에서 분석 사례로 삼은 제인 엘리엇(Jane Elliott)의 ‘푸른 눈-갈색 눈’ 수업은 인종주의 문제 해결을 위해 시도된 것으로, 학생들을 우월한 집단과 열등한 집단으로 나누어 진행되는 일종의 시뮬레이션 수업이다. 이 수업은 그 효과성이 주목받으며 미국 본토뿐만 아니라 세계 여러 나라로 전파되었다. 수업과 관련된 저술, 기사문, 영상 등의 분석을 통해 도출한 엘리엇의 수업 성과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학생들이 가지고 있던 기존의 편견을 감소시켰다. 둘째, 학생들이 편견에 대항하는 힘을 길러주었다. 그러나 엘리엇의 수업은 오늘날의 관점에서 다음과 같은 한계가 있었다. 첫째, 수업자체에 윤리적 문제가 있다. 둘째, 실제 대상과 접촉이 일어나지 않았다. 셋째, 교사의 역할에 지나치게 의존하고 있다. 넷째, 편견과 관련된 인지적 요소들을 간과하였다. 엘리엇의 수업은 그 한계점에도 불구하고 당시 ‘닫힌 영역’이었던 인종주의 문제를 학교 현장에서 다루고, 그 효과 또한 명백하게 입증되었다. 평생에 걸친 엘리엇의 실천은 우리나라 교육현장에도 편견 감소 수업의 필요성을 시사한다.

영문 초록

The focus of this study is to examine the plan and practice of prejudice reduction instruction. Prejudice is a negative attitude toward the subject, closely related to the concept of stereotype, discrimination, etc. Educational efforts to reduce prejudice have been made in Korea and other parts of the world, and their importance is growing. Jane Elliott s Blue Eye-Brown Eye instruction, which was used as an example of analysis in this study, is a kind of simulation class in which students are divided into superior and inferior groups, attempted to solve racial problems. This instruction has attracted attention and spread to many countries around the world as well as the U.S. mainland. The results derived from the analysis of the related writings, articles, and videos are as follows. First, the instruction has reduced the existing prejudices that students had. Second, the students developed competence against prejudice. However, the instruction had the following limitations from today s point of view. First, there is an ethical problem in the instruction itself. Second, no contact had occurred with the actual target. Third, the instruction was overly dependent on the role of teachers. Fourth, cognitive factors related to prejudice were overlooked in the instruction. Despite these limitations, Elliott has dealt with the issue of racism, which was then a closed area, on school fields, and its effects were also evidently proven. Elliot s lifelong practice suggests the need for prejudice reduction instruction in Korean schools as well.
