A Critical Analysis on Multicultural Elements in Picture Books Suggested in Common Core State Standards, an Educational Initiative In the United States

국문 초록

본 연구는 미국의 공통핵심기준 (Common Core State Standards)의 부록 B에 포함된 도서 목록 중, 유치원에서 3학년까지의 목록에 포함된 그림책 80권의 다문화적 요소를 비판적으로 분석하였다. 먼저 공통핵심기준의 목적과 구성 및 특성에 대해 소개하였으며 공통핵심기준 부록 B에 대한 논의가 어떻게 이루어져왔는지 살펴보았다. 비판적 리터러시를 본 연구의 이론적 틀로 하여, 양적 내용 분석을 통해 주요 등장인물의 인종, 성별 및 성역할의 분포와 양상을 파악하였고, 질적 내용 분석을 사용하여 이러한 다문화적 요소가 독자들에게 전달할 수 있는 메시지를 고찰하였다. 그 결과 미국 공통핵심기준에 포함된 그림책들의 인종, 성별, 성역할이 현재 우리 시대와 삶의 모습에 부합하지 않으며 다소 비현실적이고 배타적인 묘사로 표현되었다는 추론이 가능하였다. 본 연구는 미국의 교육과정인 공통핵심기준에 포함된 그림책에 나타난 다문화적 요소와 이에 내제된 메시지의 내용과 문제점, 또한 개선점을 비판적으로 점검하며, 국내 교육과정에서의 활용과 정책 반영 시 고려할 수 있는 시사점을 제시하였다. 이에 본 연구는 향후 국내에서 그림책을 활용한 다문화교육의 개선과 발전 방안을 모색하기 위한 중요한 참고 사례로 살펴볼 가치가 있다.

영문 초록

This study critically analyzes multicultural elements in 80 picture books listed as “exemplar books” in Appendix B of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for kindergarten through third grade in the United States. This research first briefly introduces the purpose, formats and characteristics of the CCSS and looks into the way issues with the CCSS Appendix B has been discussed. With Critical Literacy as the theoretical framework of this study, this study identifies the distribution and patterns of race, gender and gender roles represented by the characters through quantitative content analysis, and through qualitative content analysis, it also examines the messages these multicultural elements can convey to the young readers. As a result, it was inferred that the CCSS picture books includes rather unrealistic and exclusive description of race, gender and gender roles that do not necessarily conform to our present time and lives. This study is worth looking at as a reference case from the U.S. Curriculum, in order to explore ways to improve and develop multicultural education using picture books in Korean educational settings. As this study also critically examines the contents and problems of multicultural elements, messages and improvements in the CCSS picture books, it provides implications for Korean school curriculum and policies.
