국문 초록

이 글은 장재현 감독의 영화를 살펴 한국 오컬트 장르 영화의 의의와 가능성을 알아본 것이다. 장재현 감독은 아직 많은 영화를 찍지 않은 신인 감독에 속한다. 하지만 지속적으로 유사 장르와 주제에 천착함으로써 자신의 세계를 구축하였다는 점에서 특정 의의를 확보한다. 장재현이 지속적으로 관심을 갖고 있는 내용을 세 가지로 정리했다. 첫째 장재현 영화에는 여러 언어가 등장하는데 그가 다양한 언어를 동원하는 이유는 낯섦의 아우라 효과를 노리기 위한 전략이었다. 한편 언어는 자리 없는 것, 유동하는 것을 고정시키는 역할을 하였는데, 특히 이름을 붙이는 행위로 도드라지게 드러났다. 둘째 가족 서사의 강화이다. 「12번째 보조사제」로부터 『검은 사제들』에 이르는 과정에서 장재현은 가족 이야기를 크게 부각시키는데 이는 그가 영화의 큰 틀을 주인공의 성장 스토리로 담고 싶었기 때문이다. 셋째 누구도 부정하기 어려운 장재현 영화의 핵심적 소재 중 하나가 신의 문제다. 기본적으로 장재현 감독은 종교가 속세로부터 멀리 떨어져 사회의 문제를 방관하는 것이 아니라 그 반대로 사회에 개입하고 있음을 피력하여 종교의 사회성을 강조한다. 한편 악의 보편성과 신의 편재성이 공존함을 역설하여 관객에게 신의 의미 그리고 종교와 믿음의 의미를 재고하게 한다는 것도 밝힐 수 있었다. 마지막으로 최근 한국 오컬트 영화 장르의 부흥은 그것이 유사 히어로물의 역할을 담당하는 데 의의가 있다고 결론을 내렸다. 대중들의 열망은 이전의 영웅서사를 변형해 뉴히어로의 탄생을 이끌었으며, 오컬트 장르 영화는 새로운 형태의 영웅을 만나고자 하는 대중의 그런 요구에 적절히 응한 한 형태로 볼 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the films directed by Jang Jae-hyun to explore the significance and potentiality of Korean occult genre films. With a relatively limited track record, Jang Jae-hyun is not a prolific director as of now. That said, he should be noted in that he has persistently delved into similar genres and themes to establish his own world. Director Jang’s films converge on three cruces, viz. languages, families and deities. First, Jang employs multiple languages in his films in a bid to strategically utilize the aura effects of unfamiliarity. Few audiences are accustomed to Latin hymns or prayer chanting, or a girl possessed by demons bellowing out blasphemies in Chinese. Such eccentric aspects throw audiences into confusion, causing a sense of horror. Meanwhile, his languages serve to fix aimlessly floating things and in particular stand out in the act of naming, which is analyzed as a mechanism of naming in Jang’s films in this paper. Second, reinforced familial narratives are another crux of his films. From 「12th Assistant Deacon」 to 『Black Priests』, Jang underscores some stories of families in an effort to fill the macroscopic frames of his films with the growth stories of protagonists. In the same vein, Choi Bu-je in 『Black Priests』 or pastor Park in 『Svaha』 break away from their self-confined morasses of familial narratives to stand on their own feet. Third, Jang’s inquiries into deities are the other undeniably crucial material in his films. Fundamentally, director Jang emphasizes the social nature of religious beliefs, which he sets forth not as staying aloof from worldly issues but conversely as engaging therein. Simultaneously, Jang underlines the coexistence between the universality of evilness and the ubiquity of deities to coerce audiences into pondering upon the meanings of deities and of piety and faith. Lastly, the latest renaissance of Korean occult film genre represents its significant role as a pseudo hero film genre. Public aspirations have transformed previous superheroic narratives and engendered new heroes. In that respect, occult genre films well meet such a public demand for a new typology of heroes.
