『흉아리 애국자 갈소사전』 연구

국문 초록

이 연구는 1908년에 번역 출간된 헝가리 혁명 지도자 코슈트 러요시 역사전기물 『흉아리 애국자 갈소사전』의 내적 의미망과 역사적 맥락을 고찰하였다. 이를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1) 량치차오가 중역한 이 텍스트는 이보상에 의해 다시 중역되어 한국 독자들을 만났다. 량치차오가 열강에 침탈당해 고통 받고 있는 중국인들의 분발시키기 위해 코슈트전기를 번역했다면 이보상도 헝가리의 근대 영웅인 코슈트를 통하여 한국인들에게 망국 지경의 현실을 직시하고 분발시키려는 목적으로 번역했다. 2) 이보상은 량치차오의 원본을 직역하였고 량치차오의 목소리를 충실하게 한국의 독자들에게 전달하고 있다. 그런데 「서」를 통하여 자신의 목소리를 강하게 표현하고 있다. 그는 전통주의 혹은 유교 근본주의적인 성향을 가지고 있었다. 그리하여 망국적인 상황을 유교적 질서가 무너졌기 때문이라고 인식하고 유교 재건을 위해 한문현토체 소설을 창작하는 등 다양한 활동을 하였다. 그의 계몽활동과 『갈소사전』 번역도 궁극적으로는 과거로의 회귀를 위한 과정이라고 볼 수 있다. 3) 『갈소사전』은 코슈트를 중심으로 헝가리의 1848~1849년 독립 혁명 과정을 서술하고 있다. 량치차오와 이보상의 코슈트 호명은 헝가리 독립을 위해 헌신했던 코슈트의 투철한 애국심과 오스트리아 정부에 항거하는 투쟁정신 그리고 민주주의적인 담론들을 통해 독자들을 계몽시키려는 목적을 가지고 있었다. 특히 쌍립군주제와 금우헌장 그리고 코슈트의 언론활동과 의회 활동은 당시 한국의 애국계몽단체들이 주장했던 새로운 정체 구상에 유용한 지식이 될 수 있었다. 4) 『갈소사전』은 한국독자에게 코슈트와 헝가리 정치지도자들의 국회 활약상을 통하여 삼권분립, 의회민주주의 등에 대한 개념과 지식을 구체적으로 보여주고 있다. 때문에 『갈소사전』은 코슈트의 영웅적 활약상을 보여주는 전기이면서 동시에 민주주의를 학습할 수 있는 참고서로 기능했을 것으로 추정할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study explored the inner meaning and historical context of the historical and patriotic biography of Hungarian revolutionary leader, Kossuth Lajos which was translated and published in 1908. 1) The Chinese text interpreted by Liang qi-chao has been introduced to Korean readers retranslated by Bosang Lee. Bosang Lee translated it to encourage Korean people to face up to the reality of ruinous country through the modern Hungarian hero, Kossuth. In contrast, Liang qi-chao explained it to inspire the Chinese who are suffering from the invasion of the world powers. 2) Bo-sang Lee presented the original version of Liang qi-chao directly and faithfully, and powerfully conveyed Liang qi-chao s voice to Koreans. He tended to be a raditionalist or a Confucian fundamentalist. Therefore, he recognized the miserable situation as the Confucian order collapsed and did various activities, such as creating a novel with the Chinese literature style to rebuild Confucianism. His enlightenment activities and translations of the ‘Galsosa-Jun’ can also be seen as an ultimate process for going back in time 3) The book describes Hungary s 1848-1849 independent revolution process, focusing on the Kossuth. Using the Kossuth by Liang qi-chao and Lee Bo-sang was aimed at enlightening readers through his intense patriotism, the spirit of struggle against the Austrian government and democratic discourse that devoted themselves to Hungarian independence. In particular, the dual monarchies, the Golden Bull Charter, and the press and parliamentary activities of the Kossuth could have been the useful knowledge of the new identity initiative that Korean patriotic enlightenment groups claimed at the time. 4) The ‘Galsosa-Jun’ illustrates the concept and philosophy of the separation of powers and parliamentary democracy through the activities of the Kossuth and Hungarian political leaders in the National Assembly. I considers the book as a biography of the heroics of the Kossuth and the textbook of democracy.
