국문 초록

고소설의 질병은 인물의 운명과 작품의 주제의식 형상화에 깊이 관여한다. 본고는 유학의 ‘수신(修身)’ 개념으로 접근하여 이러한 고소설 속 질병의 의미 양상을 살펴보고, 이를 독자 효용성 측면에서 논의해보았다. 수신은 유학이 전통적으로 내세우는 심성 수 양의 방법으로 몸과 마음, 즉 외면과 내면을 끊임없이 돌아보며 인격자로서 성장해나가는 길을 뜻한다. ‘수신’은 결국 마음과 몸이 긴밀히 이어져 있으며, 마음이 바르면 몸도 바르게 되고 옳은 행동을 하게 됨을 의미한다. 조선후기 19세기를 중심으로 발간된 고소설 중 ‘질병’을 인물의 운명과 서사의 주요사건 혹은 소재로 삼은 작품을 연구대상으로 선택했다. <변강쇠가>, <박씨전>, <숙향전>, <심청전>, <퇴별가>가 이에 해당한다. 이들 작품을 ‘수신’의 관점으로 살핀 결과, 수신과 개인 운명이 밀접함 뿐 아니라, 개인의 건강이 공동체의 운명과 직결되어 있음을 발견할 수 있었다. 인간과 질병을 분절적 관점으로 접근하는 기존 서양 의학의 입장에서도, 수신의 관점은 인간 존재의 이해와 질병 원인에 대한 총체적 해석을 시도한다는 점에서 시사하는 바가 크다. 또한 본 연구는 수신을 통한 인물과 주제 형상화 양상을 도출하였다. 따라서 고소설 해석의 새로운 틀을 제안하는 측면에서도 의의를 가질 것이라 본다.

영문 초록

This study first approached from the perspective of Susin(moral cultivating). And secondly looked at the meaning and role of the disease in the korean old novel, and examined it in terms of the utility of the reader. Susin(Moral Cultivating) refers to a\ way of cultivating the mind, which is traditionally taught by Confucianism, and a way of growing up as a person, constantly looking at the body, mind, outer face and inner face. For the purpose of this study, I chose to study the works which made illness as the main motive of the narrative among the novels published in Korea from the 19th century to the early 20th century. The works of this study are , , , and . From the point of view of Susin, we can confirm that the cultivation of mind and health care is not a separate concept from the viewpoint of the old novel. We can also look closely at the relationship between mind and body health. The concept of Susin means that individuals with a healthy body and mind must act in a way that can benefit the community and that it is the fulfillment of true health. From the standpoint of Western medicine, which sees human beings from a segmental point of view about diseases, the point of view of Susin is significant. This is also significant in that it proposed a new interpretation to analyze the korean old novels.
