선초 奏文을 통해 본 事大外交의 전략과 修辭

국문 초록

본고는 明과의 안정적 관계가 시급하던 조선 초기, 외교 실무 문서 奏文을 대상으로 명분과 실리, 사대와 자주라는 양극의 가치 사이에서 문장이 어떤 역할을 하였 는지, 외교 현안을 해결하고 성과를 이끌어내기 위해 문장 구성과 표현에 있어서 어떠한 수사적 전략을 구사했는지를 살피기 위해 시도되었다. 奏文은 제후국의 임금이 중국의 황제에게 외교 현안에 대해 요청· 보고 · 해명 등의 내용을 담아 전하는 실무적 사대문서이다. 대제학을 비롯하여 당대의 명망 있는 문장가들이 글을 지었고, 제술부터 수정, 발송에 이르기까지 수많은 논의와 검토 과정을 거쳤으며, 실제적인 성과를 이끌어 내기 위해 사안의 성격이나 정황에 따라 다양한 방식의 서술 전략을 모색하였다. 신뢰성을 담보하기 위해 인명 지명 숫자 등의 정보는 정확성을 기하였고, 내용을 증명하는 관련 자료를 소상히 첨부하여 객관성을 강화하였으며, 명나라 황제의 勅書를 적극 활용, 직접적인 언술이나 많은 설명 없이도 자료의 권위에 의해 설득력을 확보할 수 있도록 하였다. 한편, 결정 주체인 명 황제를 추켜세우거나 자국을 낮추는 심미적 전략을 구사함으로써 상대가 사안을 긍정적으로 받아들일 수 있는 토대를 마련하였고, 공손한 표현 속에 말하고자 하는 내용을 은근히 함축시키는 방식을 통해 실리를 도모하였다. 이러한 전략은 奏文을 전송하는 방식에도 적용되어, 名分과 事大를 표방하고 미사여구로 점철된 表箋과 실리적 내용을 담은 奏文을 함께 보냄으로써 심미적 효과는 강화하고 민감도는 완화시키는 형태로 나타나기도 하였다. 실제로 이렇게 만들어진 주문은 파저강 야인 정벌 및 4군6진의 개척 등 군사 행동을 합리화하는 논리를 제공하였고, 進獻 貢物의 축소, 被虜人의 刷還 등 외교적 성과를 거두기도 하였다. 奏文에서 ‘事大’라고 하는 한편의 의미만 읽고 굴욕적인 글로 매도해서는 안 되는 이유가 여기에 있다. 왕조의 기반 조성과 明과의 안정적 외교 관계가 시급했던 시기, 주문은 事大와 名分, 자주와 실리 사이에서 균형을 꾀하 면서 국익을 위해 치밀하게 기획된 국가의 文章이기 때문이었다.

영문 초록

Jumoon(奏文) is a practical document ordered by the King to resolve diplomatic issues with China. Reputed writers of the time wrote the document by going through numerous discussions and reviews from writing, revision, and submission. Also, a variety of narration strategies were sought to induce practical accomplishments. In order to ensure the reliability, the information regarding the names of people, regions, and number were strived to be accurate, and detailed supporting materials were attached to prove the contents to ensure objectivity. By utilizing authoritative documents such as Chikseo(勅書) from Ming Dynasty, the power of persuasion was achieved without description in details of explanations. In addition, by applying aesthetic strategies by praising the emperor of Ming Dynasty, who was the decision-maker, or by humbly speaking of Joseon Dynasty, the writers indented to create the foundation for favorable acceptance while seeking for practical interests by implicitly connoting the contents within the polite expressions. These strategies are also applied when sending the Jumoon. By sending the Pyojeon(表箋), which was filled with rhetorics of justifications and toadyism, together with Jumoon, which contains practical contents, the intention was to strengthen the aesthetic effects while alleviating the sensitivity. Jumoon, which was created through these processes, provided the logic to rationalize military actions for securing the land, and there was actual diplomatic accomplishments such as reduced amount of presentations and tributes to the emperor and repatriation of abducted people. This is why Jumoon should not be demeaned as a degrading document by focusing too much on the “toadyism.” During the period when it was emergent to create the foundation of the dynasty while stabilizing the diplomatic relations, Jumoon was the means to balance between the cause and toadyism, as well as between the independence and practicality, through elaborately planned document seeking for the national interest.
