국문 초록

이 논문은 결혼 전후를 통해 가족, 가정, 국가 그리고 자신의 문화적 차이를 경험한 결혼이주여성이 어떻게 자신의 가정을 이해하고 있는지를 살펴본다. 이를 위해서 본 논문은 여성주의의 ‘교차성’ 개념을 적용하여 결혼이 주여성의 경험을 분석했다. 교차성은 젠더, 인종, 계급, 섹슈얼리티 등의 여러 사회적 차이가 교차하면서 복합적으로 파생되는 불평등의 분석 도구로 여성주의에서 활발히 사용되고 있다. 분석의 결과 본 논문은 결혼이주여성은 자신들의 사회적 관계 차이를 인식하고 이를 자신의 경험으로 새로이 해석해내는 문화번역자이며, 이들의 가정은 사회적 관계차이가 서로 충돌하고 새로운 억압과 차별을 만들어내는 지점으로 작동해 이들이 가정 내 사회재생산 역할에 몰두할 수밖에 없는 장소임을 밝힌다. 그러나 이와 같은 ‘헌신적인 아내 되기’는 일방적인 것이 아니라 문화적 차이를 번역한 이주여성이 한국사회와 가정 내에서 보다 나은 삶을 위한 자신의 협상이자 전략이기도 하다. 따라서 결혼이주여성의 가정은 이와 같은 복잡한 관계와 차이의 지점을 내재한 역동적인 장소임을 주장한다.

영문 초록

This paper examines how foreign brides, who have experienced cultural differences between their natal and marital families, home and host countries, and themselves, understand their homes. To this end, this paper analyzes the experiences of these women by applying the concept of ‘intersectionality’ in feminist studies. Intersectionality is used as an analytical tool of weighted oppression and inequality derived from various social differences such as gender, race, class, and sexuality. As a result, this paper suggests that foreign brides are cultural translators who recognize the differences in their social relations and interpret them through their own experiences. For them, homes are intersections where their social relations and differences collide with each other and create new oppression and discrimination, which make the women decide to become devoted housewives. However, becoming devoted housewives is not a one-sided acceptance but negotiation and strategy for them who translate cultural differences for better lives in Korean society and at homes. In this vein, this paper argues that foreign brides’ homes are dynamic places inherent in such complex relationships and differences.
